How much did you really train for the camino?

Buen Camino, Maggie! I am also in my thirties, swim, ski, exercise regularly, and have the benefit of living at high altitude. However, I have always been overweight. I did not train with my pack at long distances for either of my Caminos. On both walks I took it slow at first (7 to 12 km a...

    camino primitivo - TEVA's?

Can you take both? I walked the French and the Portuguese route in Chaco sandals and also had Salomon trainers. I wore the sandals for the majority of the trip but began alternating shoes in the middle of my walk. It was a great way to prevent from getting blisters!

" Where is the spirit of the Camino? If I bump into you on the walk and you need help is it OK to walk by letting you know that I already helped someone and look for them?" I like this response!

Starting in Porto Aug 10, 2013

Hi Debbie! You will enjoy this rote very much! I just finished the route two weeks ago. I can't speak to the 5 days on the costal bit, however. I will say you need to be a bit more vigilant (compared to the French way) when looking for markers.

Hostals / private albergues in Porriño?

Hi there, I can't tell you about private accommodations-- I did not stop in Porrino. I also walked from Tui and kept going to Mos and stayed at the Albergue there. It makes for a long day at 24km through the challenging city of Porrino, but worth it in the end. Mos is small and the Albergue...

    Questions about walking alone

Congrats on walking the Camino! I was 30 (and am female) and have started each Camino alone. However, in my experience I'm never alone. You meet people on the first day who will be your friends and shortly after some of them, if not most, will be your family. This never made since to my...

Backpacks… Do I try overhead or as checked luggage?

Hello, I, too, had similar concerns a few weeks ago when flying to start a Camino. My pack is a 35 liter Osprey and I feel I pack it small. I left enough room to shove my walking sticks down in the side, while cinching my bag down so only the handles of the poles stuck out. I was flying from a...

Grayland, Do you know if there is a list or resource that says where other groups congregate in the US? Thanks!

Backpacker's rain gear + reading on the trail?

I didn't take books on my first Camino and was glad. I focused on writing in a journal (which I don't do at home). I would not have had enough time at night to do both. I just finished walking a few days ago and did not bring books this time either. I wish I had. I had more time on the...

    Publicly humiliated for snoring

Snoring, farting, and plastic bag rustling is all a part of the experience. We all create some noise that might bother others. I'm sorry that you were ridiculed.

    Train Derailment at Santiago

Train De Railment ... I am in Santiago and headed to the Cathedral at 9:00 PM to view this evening's festivities and light show only to be turned around-- they have cancelled the St. James festival due to the tragic train crash. There is an uncertain energy in the city as pilgrims and and...

I am in Santiago and headed to the Cathedral at 9:00 PM to view this evening's festivities and light show only to be turned around-- they have cancelled the St. James festival due to the tragic train crash. There is an uncertain energy in the city as pilgrims and and locals try and grasp the...

    Water

I also use a bottle and have figured a good way to keep it close so I don't have to take my pack off. It is positioned between my body and the left strap of my bag. On my first Camino I didn't like carrying the weight of the bladder filled with water and I also like to see how much I have left...

Tent? Sleeping Bag? Porto --> Santiago

I will be walking from Porto to Santiago in July. I'd like to avoid the weight of a sleeping bag and a tent. However, if there are nice, safe places to camp I would consider bringing the items. Does anyone have a thought or suggestion? Thanks!
