Mud and more mud
I just trudged through the mud a couple of days ago in sandals with many near misses too -- thankfully I had a hiking pole. There is also quite a bit of mud pre-Guernika too (i.e. from Markina-Xemein onwards), some people walked along the BI-2224 road instead, it is well-marked as it's the cycle...- rainalready

Hostel/Hotel at start of Camino in Irún?
I stayed at the Bar Pension Restaurante Bidasoa for €30 a few days ago, as my bus was only arriving to Irun at 11:40pm which would've been too late for any albergue. Nothing fancy, but super convenient because it's just 2 mins walk from the train/bus station plus along the camino route, and...- rainalready

Suggestions for 4 - 5 days from Gijon?
Many thanks for the suggestions! I'll head from Gijon to San Sebastian then, and walk towards Bilbao if/until I run out of time. It looks like the best way is by ALSA bus (www.elsa.es), 4 buses a day, travel time of 5 - 6 hours for €28? Thanks again!- rainalready
