Unfortunately, I am still in Laredo, my ankle is still injured, and I am going home early. But the time I spent on the Norte, from Irún to Zamudio, was fantastic, and I will be back. Buen Camino a todos peregrinos!
Thank you all for the great suggestions! Plan B is taking the bus to Laredo tomorrow, resting my ankles by walking without pack on level-ish ground, and then, hopefully, continuing.
Hola! I am currently on the Norte route, very close to Bilbao. It has been wonderful and beautiful, but I overdid it, and my ankles are very sore. In retrospect, I should have taped my ankles earlier and/or sent my pack ahead each day. It also took me two long days of walking to get to a place...
I walked it today and found that by crossing over just after leaving the airport, I was on a shoulder with a barrier. It felt good to walk in the fresh air after so many hours on planes and in airports!
Is this based on current conditions, or just a general approach to take? I know how to get an early start, but I'm wondering if this is currently necessary for that particular albergue. Thanks!
I'm about to start next week, and hope to stay there. I'd also be interested in knowing what time it fills up. (Yes, I know it opens at 16:00, but on my previous Caminos, at other albergues but on multiple occasions, there was already such a long line waiting when an albergue opened that people...
I'm in Oaxaca, Mexico, studying Spanish until at least mid-February, 2018. Are there any pilgrims or hope-to-be pilgrims who would like to get together and talk about the Camino?
(I can't find an existing thread or forum that covers this, so please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place.)
I'll be starting on Tuesday, September 5, from either Pamplona or Roncesvalles, depending on the timing of the bus connection from P to R. Seattle, WA, USA. This is my second Camino.
Thanks! I should be fine. I started the CF in late August (2015) and hit some hot days, and I recently camped and hiked in Death Valley. I'm not a mad dog or Englishman, so I stay out of the midday sun, hydrate, and pay attention to salt intake, and I am not too proud to take a day off or even...
I'm planning to start in Seville shortly after that, in early September. I did the CF in the fall of 2015, and I like the idea of fewer folks and different challenges. Anybody else going at about that time?
Wow, I'm sorry you took offence. It was not meant the way you seem to have taken it, or maybe you're just having a bad day. I'm glad you try to greet the public with a smile, but I still stand by my statement that a smile can be emotionally expensive when it is demanded. That is very different...
I respectfully but heartily disagree. I believe that all one is owed is simple politeness, not a smile. I assume you have never worked with the public. A smile can be extremely expensive in terms of emotional energy when it is demanded.
I walked early fall this year (SJPdP to Finisterre), and although I was happy to chat with folks at coffee or meals, I really wanted to spend most of my walking time as alone as possible. I needed the solitude to work through some things, and I wanted the challenge of being on my own. I was...
A little over 20 years ago, I was living in the UK and about to move back to the US. I was considering spending the winter in Guatemala, but was concerned about safety. I checked with the UK Home Office, and their advisory for Guatemala at that time was that some areas were reasonably safe...

Dear Mr. Kerry. I am planning to walk the Camino Frances this fall, and I am very concerned about missing Camino pilgrim and American citizen Denise...
I have encountered flashers (including public masturbators) in cities and rural areas in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Greece. Given that, it would not surprise me to encounter one on the Camino. Try to see it from the perspective of "it's just a body; we all have them," and ignore the behavior...
