LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

The long range forecast for next week includes a fair amount of rain and clouds in Pamplona, but forecasts change!

Silk liners can't take hot dryer? What do if bed bugs?

A professional exterminator tried 4 days at -40 degrees, and the bugs revived after they warmed up. Freezing apparently doesn’t work as well as we would like.

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

Thank you for your trail report. I am hospitalera in Pamplona and one of our pilgrims was deciding whether to travel to SJPP to start or to start from here in Pamplona. You clinched her decision. BTW, consider stopping here at Betania, a new Donativo in Pamplona. We haven’t been full yet...

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

In Pamplona where I am serving as hospitalera, we have seen the crowd from last weekend that started in SJPP and Roncesvalles work their way through the Zubiri bottleneck, and start to spread out. BTW, there was a dusting of snow in Roncesvalles last night!

LIVE from the Camino New donativo in Pamplona is open: Betania

No reservations but we have had plenty of open beds every night since we are new. See you tomorrow!

I’m back in Pamplona serving at the new donativo Betania. Love the brand new kitchen, it makes cooking a joy! Hasn’t been full yet here. The overseeing priest, Fr. Cuco (as he wants to be called) is super friendly. Stop in if you’re in Pamplona!

    Yes, through Hosvol and Manuel.

LIVE from the Camino New donativo in Pamplona is open: Betania

I just started today volunteering at Betania, a wonderful small Donativo at the far end of Pamplona old town. It just opened last summer; all bunk beds (no mats!), usually 14 beds but in a pinch can expand to 18, and with plans to expand in the future, depending on income and grants. Father...

Returning Home & Preventing a Bedbug Infestation!

STERI -FAB is the insecticide the professional exterminator recommended to me. It is available on Amazon , has good human safety studies. It is alcohol-based and requires soaking the article.

Returning Home & Preventing a Bedbug Infestation!

Actually, I need to contradict the freezer treatment. A professional exterminator told me about using an industrial -40 degree freezer on bedbugs: they initially looked dead, but revived from hibernation after an hour. HEAT melts the outer covering (shell, essentially) of the bug: 1 hour at 125...

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

The one point I would disagree with you on, my friend, is the race for a bottom bunk. Tonight at the municipal in Viana, I got the last bottom bunk at 2 pm; the upper bunks are still not full (7:30 pm). One place I tried in Estella yesterday had no lower bunks by 1:30 pm but all their upper...

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

So Alex went for food and forgot to bring me with him! That’s ok, I did laundry and he didn’t (different priorities for different perigrinos; hey, it’s his camino, lol!) But he’s right, there are still plenty of beds available (although I think most of the bottom bunks in town are taken), and...

@Kirkie, nice to hear from you! Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll look for a free moment to try it out. Maybe I can make it to Dublin next time.

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

I saw a fellow with a glass of wine in the back garden and asked where he procured it; subsequent questions revealed I had a multiple-Camino history and spoke English, and yes I was on Ivar’s Forum…the rest is history! (Not sure how Alex and @Kiwi-family found each other before I got there)

LIVE from the Camino Current conditions on the Frances

I started from Pamplona this morning for a quick week walking before starting service as a hospitalera next week back in Pamplona. The trail up to Alto de Perdón has only a few big puddles left after last week’s rain, with good stepping stones to get over them all. We had intended to stop in...

    Atypical/memorable albergues on Camino Francés?

I stayed in Pilar in Rabanal last fall; very nice, good food, but impersonal, some big groups.

The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

Record a new message on your phone telling people you won't be checking your voice mail for the duration (while I had a Spanish SIM card in my phone); the first time I forgot to do that, I came home to a big pile of phone messages asking why I wasn't answering their messages.

    Eunate opening hours?

I will be walking from Pamplona next week; can anyone confirm what days/hours the church at Eunate is currently open? My last walk on that stretch in 2021 I recall it was closed 1 or 2 days of the week. Or a website or phone number to check? Many thanks!

How to pack Tilley hat (ltm6) into backpack?

I actually succeeded in claiming a replacement without registering it; had to send pictures of the damage, and a second picture after cutting the brim off. I had folded it in half while packing, and the crease never came out; since I hadn’t registered it, I figured I couldn’t claim a replacement...

Shantiago - a Camino song in shanty style

Love it! I'm serving as a hospitalera in April this year (soon!!) and will bring the link to play it for our pilgrims!
