Yes - someone messaged explaining how this question ties in to those occasional 'missing pilgrim' posts. This has been a very helpful discussion.
I have - now that leaving day is so close, negotiations have been re-opened ;)
I admire you for doing this! If it weren't for the weight saved carrying my phone instead of books, camera, flashlight & such I'd love complete tech-freedom
I'm sure I will be laughing at myself pretty soon for all these questions - is it common to sort of come unglued & frazzled 10 days pre-first-camino? ...✈🚞
Thanks - this is just what I was imagining! Have you found your battery drains faster keeping gps on? I'm thinking I may need more than one external power bank...
YES!! You brilliant genius, thank you!
It is that expectation of constant contact that I want to squelch and postcards do that beautifully.
I'd been imagining one of those tracking tags like they clip on endangered species, available at REI.
Well-meaning folks are asking that I keep them posted, (check in on social media) while on my walk. I'd prefer not to touch a screen or keyboard the whole 18 days at all if I could.
Has anyone found a very minimally invasive way of letting your people know you're alive while on camino?
Are there any organizations that give or take donated poles & sticks at the end of one's camino? My checked bag fee is absurd (the 'gotcha' to a phenomenal airfare price) so I'm thinking to purchase on arrival and donate before I return. Is that a thing?
Every other aspect of my practice walks for my first camino in September are going great. The only thing I find myself impatient with is the process of getting stuff in and out of my pack during the walk - it just feels awfully clumsy and awkward.
Experienced pilgrims: what have you learned to...
Thank you for taking the risk!
I was baptized Catholic but received First Communion in the Methodist church (parents divorced and my religious upbringing changed in the process) and spent summers at a born-again-Christian summer camp. Now 46, I've pieced together a regular spiritual practice...
This is such a great discussion, but I'm also feeling myself in danger of veering off into a few potential 'no-go' religion questions, like how to confess and commune as a first-timer. I should work this in to my other preparation so it can come from a sincere place. Rule 2 does acknowledge the...
Thank you t2andreo, I have been curious about whether it would be acceptable for me to earn an indulgence for a deceased family member when I'm a baptized but not practicing Catholic. I appreciate you taking such care to explain a pretty confusing topic.
I found this in a guide to the Camino...
I have to confess I have no idea how to work with moleskin - it's not a sterile bandaid, it's not really tape, it's sticky and has a bit of bounce...
I figured I'd bring a tiny amount to keep around in case it suddenly becomes clear what moleskin is for once I have my first camino hot spot...
Oh! That's super helpful, thank you - I was thinking of a first aid kit for potential medical emergencies among my fellow pilgrims. The personal approach makes it much easier.
Thank you for the tip on the Leuko tape, it's not something I've used before but it looks more versatile than something...
Packing my first first aid kit, I'm having a hard time deciding what's essential. The pre-made kits you can buy at field-and-stream type stores seem to be way too much stuff.
What do you like to keep in your pack for first aid on the camino? If it would vary based on which route you're taking...
I'm just starting to go hunting for my albergue options - thank you for the tip on parish and monastery ones. One thing I would really like to avoid as much as possible is using my phone or any related technological gadgets at all, so I'll focus on the no-reservations spots first.
Do you think...
