Two things worked for me, after I tried everything else, I got both treatments from a podiatrist:
1) cortisone shot made it go away for about a month, enough to do my trip (but it wasn't a hiking trip)
Then when I got back:
2) "iontophoresis" a topical cortisone applied to a bandage...
Yes, definitely start with your existing health insurance company. Medicare does not cover you overseas, but my secondary insurance, Blue Cross, says it offers the same coverage as in the US, including evacuation if medically necessary. I take the form, phone numbers, and instructions with me...
I'm interested in your comment about "...decline in numbers walking the earlier parts of the Frances". Do you mean a relative decline, compared to the numbers walking Sarria to Santiago? Or actually a year by year decline in Camino walkers overall, except for S to S? I'm asking because I'd...
Consider the Via Podiensis, from Le Puy en Velay (France). There are lots of beautiful medieval villages, and there is, or used to be, a bus that stopped at each stage for the first 12 stages or so. We left from the Cathedral in Le Puy, along with all the other pilgrims, and walked the first...
Thank you for the detailed information, I was an "Amiga" a few years ago and liked it very much. I would also suggest that if you have taken Hospitalero training, then mention that, too, and if you haven't taken it then try to do so as soon as you can. The duties of a Hospitalero (volunteer in...
I grow Portugese Kale in my garden in northern California, I brought the first batch of seeds back from Galicia and now buy them online, they are "Tronchuda beira" It's a very hardy plant, tolerates cold and heat and drought. Also a biennial, I usually can keep it for 2 years before it goes to...
Thanks for the list. When I first hiked the Camino in 2010, 10 E Menus were the norm. Less than 10 E the meals were not as good, and at 15 E they were deluxe. I'm actually pleased that they haven't gone up very much since then, I'll be in Spain in March and have been expecting to pay more...
Sarria to Santiago is in Galicia, a special place different from the usual expectation of Spain (although Spain is very diverse) It is a place of forests, and mists, and witches!! Or so they say, it has retained parts of its Celtic past. It has horreos, and old livestock corridors where you...
Muxia is lovely, please don't call it a "hole"! When I was there a few years ago it was a quiet, authentic Spanish coastal town, where you could go down to the harbor and chat with the fishermen bringing in their catch, or walk the paths up above town and discuss the kale crop with the older...
I use Skyscanner for flights, and use the "multicity" option to get flights for an "open jaw" (coming into one airport, but out another) I use Rome2Rio for land based travel. Is Rome2Rio a good source for flights, too?
Thanks very much for your response! I have read that there are beautiful forests around Sutri, I think between Vetralla (stage after Viterbo) and Sutri or maybe after Sutri, do you remember those, and if so do you think that stage is worth it? I want to visit Sutri anyway, and could bus or...
Thanks very much for your response and the sections. I have heard there are beautiful forests (and, I think, a regional park) before or after Sutro, what do you think about those sections? They are south of Viterbo.
Hi All I have about 8 days in September and I'd like to walk Siena to Rome. Obviously, I need to skip some sections, so I'm looking for suggestions on what to skip, or, better, what I should not miss? I can do about 20 kms a day, but not much more. I'm happy to hop a bus or taxi, or skip...
You might consider carrying a small water filter, some types weigh less than a pound. They improve the taste of treated water, and they could also be used to purify stream water (verify this for the filter chosen) which means you'd have more options for refilling along the way
Hi Cathy
I have the same question, I am hoping to walk from Gran St. Bernard to Ivrea September 2022, and planning to travel from Turin or Milan. I have distilled the info below from Rome2Rio website, and I'd be very interested in what you have found out or what your experiences are.
The...
I just returned from Italy and it was very easy to get a covid test at a pharmacy in Salerno (and probably most places) the day before. No appointment, cost 15 Euros, took about 30 minutes. Just ask for one, there may not be a sign in the window but every pharmacy I asked did them
A...
Thanks for that info, trecile. I am leaving for Italy soon, and I just upgraded my tMobil to "Magenta 55" or something like that, and supposedly I will have unlimited text and data, with phone calls at 25 cents per minute. Does this seem right to you? Also, are the phone calls 25 cents per...
