Nice place to stay between Belorado and Burgos?

I’ve stayed in St Anton Abad twice. Great place to chill out as there’s little else to do!

    albergues open in october?

October is usually pretty good for albergue availability. Some start closing in November if they’re seasonal.

    Weather during october/november?

I’ve often walked in late October (various section of the Frances as it corresponds to UK school hols) and have often had really good weather. There’s been the occasional bit of rain but generally I found it to be a good time to walk. Sun’s up just around 8ish and it does get chilly in the...

Brisbane peregrine/as - where did you hill train

I think if you can do the trails around Mt Coot-tha you’ll be fine. Just being generally hill ready is helpful but there’s only a few places where a good part of of your day is hill (like out of St Jean). Take snacks, have rests and heed the advice of the pilgrim office in St Jean. Don’t be...

    Villafranca Montes de Oca

That makes sense. I was surprised because the muni was plenty busy last time I came through but that was a few years ago. Many of the off stage albergues are experiencing a significant drop in numbers this week. There was maybe a dozen of us in Villafranca the other day. In Tardajos last night I...

LIVE from the Camino Am I on the meseta yet?

I loved the meseta, my walking companion from my first Camino did not. Now I'm redoing the camino in week long stages year by year. Was hoping for a tiny glimpse of meseta this year but have been stymied just outside of Burgos by an aching knee muscle and uncooperative bus times. I'm a little...

Starting 2nd of september from SJPP

You'll be fine, you'll have more fun if you halve your pack weight. I did my first Camino with a similar weight and my feet did not thank me. I pack lighter now and it makes a huge difference. Buen Camino!

As seasons change albergue times you must be out by do not

I like to leave just before 8 so that I can watch the sun come up as I walk. It's usually light enough to see by 8.15 and in any case, the clocks are changing in two days time :)

    Villafranca Montes de Oca

Unless it has moved, the municipal albergue is currently closed. The hotel albergue will also be closing for the season soon. Just a heads up for anyone wanting to stay here soon, maybe phone ahead to check what's open. It's a long way to San Juan for a bed.

***Tardajos or Burgos? That is the question***

I'm currently in Tardajos and it's a nice place to while away an afternoon. Sadly, as many seem to stop in Burgos this is the first time I've had an albergue to myself. I'm here because I did a half stage in order to easily return to Burgos for a bus tomorrow. Between La casa de beli and La...

    is Express Bourricot still operating?

I had heard they wouldn't be running this year but others seem to have booked them for transport fairly recently.

    First time

No problem. I've done it twice now and while you'll want to have a little rest stop at Orisson (the bit just preceding it is the steepest section), completing the walk over the mountain is a massive first day achievement. What I did differently on walk two was stop at Zubiri instead of hauling...

    First time

Most people do the walk from SJPdP to Roncesvalles in one go. The forum is only a tiny amount of the people on Camino. Just because lots of people on the forum like to book Orisson doesn't make it the norm. SJPdP to Pamplona in three days is doable.

    First time

I think practicing longer walking distances is a good idea. I hadn't done much over 20-25km and the first week was quite a learning curve. That said, I got the hang of quickly enough. I have only ever booked non-albergue accommodation (eg hotels or gites in bigger cities). Everything else we...

    In León- now what?

Rabanal has albergues as well as private accommodation. I think Foncebadon is a bit smaller but someone might know if there are private rooms. We stopped at Rabanal, then enjoyed Molinaseca. It's got a lovely bridge and river to sit by while having an afternoon beer. We did end up walking...

    In León- now what?

Yes to Astorga and Gaucelmo at Rabanal. We also stopped at a lovely little place in Las Herrerias with communal vegetarian meal. Started the O Cebreiro walk early from there and found only the stretch up to LaFaba to be a bit steep. We rewarded ourselves with coffee in a nice cafe and thoroughly...

Rucksack malfunction - option to buy in Puente la Reina?

Planeta Agua is a chain of outdoor stores that are in a few Camino locations. There's a small one in Zubiri and there's one in Logrono.

Rucksack malfunction - option to buy in Puente la Reina?

There's definitely a big Decathlon on the way out of Estella which is a bit closer to where you currently are (if you can't find some lonely abandoned pack to adopt).

    A cure for Pilgrim crankiness

I wonder if the ease of internet access is helping fuel this. Previously you would have time to ponder your Camino events (pleasant or otherwise) before returning to the forum to discuss them. Now lots of people can quickly vent about grievances without considering the tone they are sending out.

Latest time of year to walk over the mountain from SJPDP

If you're going all the way to Roncesvalles in one go (I've done it twice) then I'd suggest leaving about 8am. It may be a little dark the later into October you get but it soon brightens up on your way out of town. This leaves a good eight or so hours to get to Roncesvalles in daylight with...
