Hi folks,
As my final Camino I decided to try and replicate a medieval pilgrim's journey returning home to Scotland from Santiago.
I had already walked and cycled the Camino 6 times on different routes and at varying times of year
I began walking from Santiago in October, 2015 but, due to tragic...
I didn't watch all of the first episode as I don't think my elevated blood pressure would have taken more of it.
I began shouting at the "presenter" when he complained that he "wasn't seeing many pilgrims".
He was driving a car on a major road at 50+ m.p.h.
He didn't pay attention to me, so I...
Thanks Galway Man - I thought that I was perhaps the only one to use this ruse. To be honest I don't speak Gaelic but if I meet a really boring person (like a timeshare tout) I start reciting the names of Scottish mountains to them, while smiling. Puts them off every time.
Another old favourite for listening to on a really rotten day (i.e. descending to Triacastela on a wet day) is :- Chris Rea singing "Road to Hell pt 2"
Just after San Anton as the road begins to swing towards Castrojerez I switch on John Williams playing Concierto de Aranjuez. If I get things right I have what, for me, is the essence of Spain drowning my senses. Wonderful.
I had a very strange thing happen to me in Stanstead airport. I had stayed overnight in an airport hotel to catch the early flight to Santiago. At 5am/ish I was standing in the concourse when I thought I heard my name spoken. I looked around but didn't recognise anybody and relapsed into brain...
I was alone as I approached a small aulberge during my Winter walk on the Francaise. I had had a long, cold and tiring day but with the aulbergie door in sight was happy. Then a feral pigeon landed on the road in front of me. This wee bird seemed intent on leading me to the door of the building...
I refuse to read this post as it has been delivered to my home in an non authentic method. I would prefer the author to follow his own advice and be authentic in all he/she does. Any communication should be delivered, by hand, to my home on vellum, hand written with ink made from Oak gall...
It would be very easy to take umbrage to your post.
Given my age (69 very soon) I am confused.
What do you want?
Photographs of "Happy students" or "old boring people".
How about photographs of "PILGRIMS"
May I suggest that you re-phrase your request - how about -"Pilgrims on the Camino, as it...
Hi Chris,
I should like to paste an "old" post from Sil.
I have twice walked with A. a young offender and B a "Guardian Angel" in this scheme.
It is still very active.
"Go to: http://www.alba.be/
Oikoten (a Greek word with a double meaning - ‘away from home, away from your native country’ and...
Hi,
May I set a rather different hare running on this interesting topic.
Put simply - "what does the Compostela mean to today's Pilgrim?".
Is it a free pass from time to be spent in Hell OR a rather lovely piece of paper?
As a non Catholic I had two of my four framed and I look at them ever...
Hi all,
I had,for me, three Camino firsts during my fourth journey earlier this year.
In Burgos a female pilgrim spent approx 30 minutes, on a dark cold morning, putting on FULL face makeup and in Astorga a male Pilgrim sprayed himself with a deodorant.
On our final day my companions and I were...
Hi all from Portomarin,
I am sorry that I haven´t been able to post before. The terminals I have tried to use have been either been in use or jammed up with rubbish so very slow.
The journey so far has been blessed with good weather, I have worn my rain jacket 6 times. The local folk however...
I knew there was something/somebody that I had missed.
We, who go to Santiago are dependant, mentally, on those that we leave at home. I am fortunate that my wife has cycled with me to Santiago. She has been "there". She has seen what I am going enjoy/hate during the next weeks as I walk.
How...
Thanks to everyone who has sent me messages of encouragement. I hope to be attending the Pilgrim Mass in Roncevalles on Monday 28th and will take time to reflect on all the kindness in the world. All to often we hear of the negative side of things. This virtual world, run by Ivar, is the...
Hi,
I had a significant birthday today - it contains the numbers 5 & 6, but not in that order.
My dilema is - of the amber fluids given as presents - which do I carry in my Sigg flask when I leave home on Saturday to stravaig along the Francais.
The Choices are :- The Famous Grouse (2 litres)...
Hi - thanks for all the input and advice. I'm at the nervous stage just now, wondering if I have taken on to much but I'm sure that will change in the next couple of days.
Dael
Hi,
I begin walking the Francais in two weeks, begining at Roncevalles.
Can anybody advise me where I can find, in advance, which albergues are open at this time of year.
Thanks
Dael
