Ferry from England to France and Spain

A couple of times I got to Hendaye a little late so with the weather being OK I slept outside the station locked entry door until the first train to Bayonne in the very early morning. So arriving in SJPP just after 9am I got my credential and walked straight off to Roncesvalles the same day.

Ferry from England to France and Spain

I have travelled on Brittany Ferries from Plymouth to Santander several times. Then a bus to Uran, a short walk across the border into France to Hendaye rail station, then a train to Bayonne for the final journey by bus or train to SDPP. After completing my Camino a bus directly from SdC back...

Opinion on Son walking the Camino

I have walked several times on my own. 3 days after one of my sons was 16 we left home and travelled to walk the Camino Frances. We walked together from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago and walked on to Finesterre and finally to Muxia. He loved it including staying in Albergues and enjoying all...

What does the 'spirit of the camino' mean to you?

I pray my Lord I'm on my way Protect me through each Holy day I know the pilgrim's life I choose Is not a life I want to lose

Beware of the Ides of June!

A couple of years ago I stayed in an Albergue where the Hospitalero had a large TV screen to watch a European football final between Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid. He gave everyone free drinks while we watched the match!!

    Are You a Dinosaur Fan?

The Camino always gives surprises. This is what I saw back in 2016 in Orbaneja, on the road to Burgos......

    Pilgrim age

Having walked the Camino Frances three times in 2014, 2015 and 2016, this year will be quite different. My lucky number 7 has influenced this year's Camino. It is 2017 and I will be spending 7 weeks walking more than 700 miles in my 70th year, getting back home shortly before my 70th birthday.

Minimum Distance to qualify for the Compostela

It is still 100kms for walkers.

    Electrolytes?

I agree with many of the replies here. Drinking plenty of water and having a balanced daily diet is good. I also have a can of Aquarius every couple of days too.

This thing about equipment for the Camino .....

Some interesting thoughts about the benefits of keeping things very simple. My personal approach is to just take what I need. Nothing expensive, no phone or other electronics. No bookings just go with the flow and never had any problems finding a bed or anything else. My pack weight is always...

    Mint against bedbugs

If we are responsible for bedbugs travelling all along the Camino, do they qualify for a Compostela?

Alert Steep inclines / declines..... Advice

Good advice Silvester. I have met several pilgrims who have lost toenails because their footwear was too loose on downhill sections and their toes were ramming into the fronts of their shoes.

Another pilgrim killed by a car

More sad news. :( While walking on roads safety rules are vital. 1. Walk on the left side of the road so you can see traffic coming close to you. 2. Walk in single file not side by side. 3. Do not use a phone, watch for traffic. 4. Do not use earbuds, listen for traffic.

Have any of you left the Camino and done long walks elsewhere?

My first Camino was in 2014, but I have enjoyed long distance walks throughout my life mostly in the UK. Completed walks include The Pennine Way, The West Highland Way, The Two Moors Way and The Southwest Coast Path which was the longest at 632 miles. Now I have retired, I like to plan a long...

    Bedbug Question! Settle our debate!

That is an interesting thought. Maybe they are seasonal. In the last 2 years I walked in May and June so maybe that is why I never came across them.

    Bedbug Question! Settle our debate!

My experiences have been the same as Mark Lee. I accept that others have had bedbug problems, but I believe they are not everywhere just in some places. Maybe I have been lucky staying in around 70 different Albergues in the last two years. I think it shows that bedbug problems may be found in...

    Bedbug Question! Settle our debate!

So what is irresponsible? The point I was making was based on facts. I have spent more than 80 nights in May/June in around 70 different Albergues in the last 2 years and never came across any bed bugs. I always checked for signs of them when I arrived and never found anything. I never had a...
