Random thing that made you smile on Camino?

We had arrived in Espinosa late afternoon. Found ourselves the only pilgrims in an albergue. Over our communal dinner we discovered the owner cum hospitalero was ex Spanish military, parachute regiment. We got on well as I am from a military family and after the meal we were ushered into his...

    Using booking.com on your Camino

I try to buy from local businesses as their profits are more likely reinvested or spent locally. Multinationals, especially the likes of Amazon, Google, Starbucks, Apple have avoided (ie legally) millions in tax through clever schemes with low tax Dutch and Irish subsidiaries or booking sales to...

    Using booking.com on your Camino

A comment above refers to such sites as being transparent. That has not always been the case in the UK for such businesses where the market regulator has had issues with various aspects of these business models. This included scarcity warnings which this BBC article from 2019 refers to. The...

    Albergues with curtains

Take your own "curtain". Choose a lower bunk next to a wall. String a length of paracord along the top of your bunk space. Drape with towel, t shirt etc. Privacy and dry clothes. Don't forget to remove cord!

I tried this once but it was a real pain.

    Pilgrim in spirit?

If I head out to the South West Coastal Path here in Dorset it is a hike no matter that I am wearing the same clothes and pack as I use on the Camino. In the Ordesa National Park in the Pyrenees, same clothes and pack. Was it hiking? Yes it was, albeit in Spain. (Similar blisters, better...

    Pilgrim in spirit?

I wouldn't give it a moment's thought. From this one instance on the CF there's a lot of people having their packs transported. Not sure I'd want mine to be on the bottom of the pile. (view of the Jacotrans boys hard at work. Everyone's pack is welcome!)

    Advice on Heat

Lots of comments about carrying extra water. Remember that adequate hydration in high temperatures starts with fluid intake before walking. Better to neck a bottle of water before starting than carrying it and waiting to feel thirsty. A key test to objectively check you are drinking enough is...

    Advice on Heat

Good advice from Marbe2 but we need to be clear about the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The symptoms listed above are those of heat exhaustion which is an unpleasant enough experience in itself. I suffered from this a few years back between Leon and Hospital. The steps to...

    Fires in Navarra

I lived in Brazil for many years and remember how the forestry companies were developing eucalyptus plantations. If I recall correctly growing conditions were so favourable that a tree could be harvested after 3-4 years. I just checked to see how extensive eucalyptus had become in Brazil -...

    Heatwave alert. Southern Spain especially

Just saw in this Guardian article today that it is going to be unseasonally hot. Take care folks - plenty of advice in previous threads on keeping cool, hydration, etc.... I experienced heat exhausation on the CF a few years back. Not a pleasant experience...

Coming Back from Fractured Ankle Shoe Thoughts..Hokas to ?

I also use Hokas as I find the cushioning helps with a touch of arthritis in one foot. Hiking poles can help take some of the load and I use them on the up and down slopes for stability as well. I've looked at Hoka hiking boots which might combine the cushioning with the support you're after.

Which is the flattest major Camino de Santiago route?

Fully respect the OP's preferences but for me it's the ups and downs that make it interesting. A bit like life itself. And the view from the top sure beats the view on the flat although I'll make an exception for the Meseta!

Inflation surge in northern Spain? (Winter 21/22)

I had a small chuckle when I saw the OP referring to inflation surging. I lived in Brazil for many years and recall inflation hitting 80% monthly back in 1990

LIVE from the Camino Paq Peregrino - our experience

Three years ago as the weather turned warmer we shipped our down sleeping bags ahead from Astorga to Santiago using the Correos. Astorga post office was fully up to speed on the procedure.

Food - Finding Freeze Dried Rice in Spain?

This thread is beginning to resemble a Monty Python script. Dead parrot, anyone?

I am leaving. Not Forum just yet, but Camino.

Hi David I have already purchased several items from your Ebay store (caminostore) this year and just had another peek. And whilst echoing the message of the many posts above may I also drive some traffic your way by asking whether those expensive boots wouldn't be blister inducing or are...

If you read the article I suggest also clicking on the link to the New York Times write up on Luis Rios. Well worth a read.
