    Charity Collectors Scamming in Santiago?

You're not be first to notice this problem, and the scam is rife in big cities all over Europe, particularly Paris where police occasionally round up all the collectors. These people are not collecting for charity, it is a scam and the bottom line is that it's stealing. The best thing to do is...

    Woman Eaten By Vultures

Ummm, have to say that sort of thing has crossed my mind. In 2006, walking towards Villamayor de Monjardin, I stopped for a break and just stood watching the birds high above me. After a few minutes of standing still, I realised they were circling me and getting closer and closer. What I took...

Withdrawing money on the Camino, 2013

It's my understanding that credit cards should only be used for large payments, but never used to get cash as daily interest is charged as soon as cash is withdrawn. The best way to get cash on the Camino is to use a Visa or Mastercard debit card, linked to a savings account, to withdraw cash...

Whose is the Pink Marble Tomb?

Thanks for solving that Tracy. Odd that only the other day I was going through my photo albums, found one of the tomb, and wondered when someone would work out what it was! Cheers ... Trudy

What is the most you have walked in a day?

I'm a slow walker, and 20 kms is my comfortable maximum for the day. But in 2007 I did around 34 kms when walking the Valcarlos Route between St Jean Pied de Port and Roncesvalles. I managed to get lost twice by following the off-road Camino signs after Valcarlos, so had to backtrack to the...

What and Whom is this Forum for?

What I love about this forum is the support and encouragement given to new, and repeat, pilgrims by others who've walked the Camino and know what it's all about. Yes, it can be a but this is simply because most of us are not backpackers or hikers, do not habitually go on long distance...

Private Accommodation you would not miss

I'll second the Hotel as Artes in Compostela! I've there twice and found the atmosphere much nicer than the overated, to me anyway, Hostel dos Reis Catolicos Parador. One Parador I feel should not be missed is the Hostal San Marcos in Leon. This is a much nicer set-up than the Santiago de...

Assuming it was 'weight-free' what luxury would you take?

I'd love enough English language detective novels to last me the whole Camino. As I only walk 15 to 20kms per day, so get to albergues around lunchtime, I get really bored during the afternoons and would love reading material. I'm also old-fashioned and prefer real paper books! On previous...

Camino de Santiago - a wake up call

In Ventosa, in 2006, we were awakened by classical music at 6am. What made it even more special was that each pilgrim had to agree, on arrival, not to get up before 6am. So no dawn chorus of early wakers rustling plastic bags. Trudy

Movie "The Way" has been released on DVD

I'd love to purchase 'The Way' but can't work out from the website if international mail is an option, or what the costs would be. Anyone know? Trudy

    Knight of Santiago - AMARYLLIS

In Australia the common name for these plants is the St james Lily. I have hundreds growing in my garden, they flower in spring and are such a cheerful vibrant red. It was only after my first walk along the Camino that I found out the name of these bulbs and was surprised, and thrilled, to...

    Tao

The Tau Cross is the symbol of St Francis of Assisi and the Franciscans. Legend has it that St Francis walked the Camino de Santiago, and no doubt in medieval times there were Franciscan monasteries based along the Camino. While St Francis used the Tau to represent his vision of monasticism...

    Hair

Hair length is personal choice and what you can manage to look after. No-one brings a hairdryer on the Camino, not that I've seen anyway, and no-one will take any notice of how your hair looks. My hair is mid-length and on the Camino I just washed it and let it dry naturally. I did take a...

what did you find the hardest thing?

The hardest thing for me was the enforced socialising as I'm rather a solitary person. Walking only 20kms each day meant I had long afternoons to fill. At each stop I'd have a shower, wash my clothes, go to the nearest bar for the Menu del Dia lunch, and then go sightseeing. However, this...

NOTIFY YOUR BANK BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOLKS

A couple of years ago I came across pilgrims with the same problem. Luckily their family was able to send funds through Western Union. Another thing to remember is that most European ATMs require a 4 digit PIN, and most have numeric keypads only, not alphanumeric. So if you remember your PIN...

Those metal tips on trekking poles

I use two trekking poles on the Camino and would never attempt the Camino without them. Having arthritis in both knees, and poor balance, the poles have saved me on many occasions, particularly in the first two days from Roncesvalles! They're also good to lean on going uphill. However, I...

Whose is the Pink Marble Tomb?

The question of who this tomb belongs to has always puzzeled me as well. It's not marked on any plan of the Cathedral, nor the Cathedral website, and has no plaque (at least not in 2007). One guidebook mentions that James had two followers but that there bones were placed in St James silver...

Another new photostream on You Tube!

Finally I've worked out how to upload my Camino photos to YouTube. So, if anyone is interested in seeing more pics, and music, from the Camino just go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-Qu5x23Ozk Cheers ... Trudy

    Sun Compass

Jane, you'll have no problems finding your way and, while John Brierley's sun compass is interesting, it's definitely not necessary on the Camino. I found that using the sun as a guide was a little confusing for an Australian, as I automatically expected to see the sun to the north as I would...

problems for non-euro bank accounts and spanish atms

It seems the only problem is if you ask to see the amount in something other than Euros. Can't understand why anyone would bother doing that. I think the majority of pilgrims are savvy enough to work out how many Euros they need to withdraw without requiring an instant conversion.
