In praise of Motel Truckstops on the Camino

This reminds me of a Trucker-style hotel we stayed at right near Santiago de Compostela which served us the most ludicrous G & Ts in mugs along with T bone steak dinners for probably a quarter the cost of doing so in North America.

    Where do ( did ) you walk ( locally ) in 2022?

The snow has been annoyingly low this year so far so haven't gone up the local mountains but did get to an area called "Tunnel Bluffs" just up the coast from Vancouver, BC:

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 8.0

I found the scallop shells I had on my bag for my first Camino Frances about a week before I started in Normandy, France at Juno Beach just down from the Canadian Museum there.

On the Camino: One Day at a Time, one Photo at a Time 8.0

A group of knights standing around in Hospital de Orbigo's Passo Honros festival June 7, 2015. I stumbled right into it on my first Camino journey lol

    Finances to Feet

I probably missed this but why not wait until your foot is a little better? If you were going to start at the beginning of April why not May? Also 50€/day is big money on Camino. Many days you can spend less than that if you stay in albergues.

On the Camino, on this date in February...

LOL I was trying to remember if this was the same place I stayed in Pontedeume in November 2015. Looks like it: Was it the same bar? I didn't take any photos of it ... but there was a bar just a bit up the road I went to for dinner and drinks. Was quiet for people but they had "The...

    Other Pilgrimage routes ......

Lovely. I walked the Lycian way in October, 2015 at the end of a string of walks (including my first Camino Frances). It was the most challenging, IMO and some of the mountains were pretty tough going.

Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2021?

On June 24th I will be attempting to complete the whole "Baden-Powell Trail" near Vancouver, Canada in a day. The trail is 48kms in length with about 2600 meters of elevation gain up and down the coastal mountains. The last couple of months I have been hiking sections of it and have done all...

What do you do when you cannot walk anymore?

I have to enjoy each moment I can. :) I'm just, still, at the beginning of my Camino + walking life but have had at least 1 large, multi-day walking adventure each year since 2013 (sans 2017). This year's Camino and Mont Blanc circuit will be my last month + off for likely 10 years ... but I...

Top 10 Best Walks in the World

Great video and list!! From those I have done the Camino Frances, the West Coast Trail and will be heading over to do the Tour de Mont Blanc this year after my next Camino Frances. In the future I hope to get to the US to try out some of the great trails down there. If you want a mid-tier...

    Food lessons for life....

In 2015 we learned: Not a huge amount of variety on the Camino! In Ponferrada we found a Chinese restaruant we went to twice in one afternoon XD

    Training schedule for the busy

What I'd probably recommend is to walk an hour or so every other day with some hills mixed in. Once your feet are totally fine add your pack and weight. If your feet are still totally fine add some more weight. You might want to take a week a month or so before and try doing 4-5 days straight...

    Let's talk weight... BODY weight

My trip was 6 months and 7 big walks. When I left home on May 5th I weighed 208 lbs (94 kgs)... After the first 10 days just on vacation in France I was down to 199 (90 kgs). (That was mostly driving and on trains) weighed on May 13th. When I finished the Camino about 6 weeks after the start...

Anxious debate with myself about the Camino

Lots of safety in the comments and I like that but you only have the one life and if you live it with passion and the way you want you will always be content whether you have a particular job or flat or not. The Camino changed many things about my life and I quit a job to go do it (and a bunch...

Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2017?

Weather has been snowy and cold here in the Pacific Northwest until the rain today. Was snowshoeing just up the road from my house a couple days ago and had a picnic in the woods.

    Post Pilgrimage Musings

Inspiring direction! I actually did 7 long distance walks in 2015 book-ended by the French and English Caminos. I met my current girlfriend (and likely fiance) as a result of her becoming obsessed with my blog updates about my adventures and we actually lived across the street from each other...
