Wow, so fast! :) I'm really looking forward to reading your blog. Anna-Marie

    Cathedral Anniversary

This information comes from reading a few Spanish websites, and my Spanish isn't wonderful, so take from it what you will. On April 21, the king will preside over a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary of the consecration of the cathedral 800 years earlier. There will be an exhibition about...

    Sleeping bag and other questions

Hi Bea, I'm a vegetarian and ate out intermittently on the Camino. If you're worried about what your meal is cooked in (likely animal fat), eating out is probably not a good idea, but if you're more of a don't-ask vegetarian like me, egg-based meals are pretty widely available, and there's...

St. Jean Pied de Port or Roncesvalles

The main difference is that if you start in Roncesvalles, you miss walking over the Pyrenees (though you do still have some serious descents). A 26/27-kilometre or so walk over a mountain is a pretty intense way to start walking, but lots of people do it. (I started in Le Puy, so didn't have to...

    Need to know?

Hi Lynne, How did I know you were Canadian even before looking at your country? :D Vive la difference, indeed. Anna-Marie

    Need to know?

That's interesting. I'd actually rather see non-Camino-related places and people pre-Camino than afterward. I spent a few days in Chartres before my Camino and it was great--and very helpful for de-jetlagging. After walking, I wasn't at all in the mood for sightseeing. Buen Camino! Anna-Marie

    Dawdling along

Thanks, Caminando! And for all the other great information you've given me, too. I went back and forth on where to start for a while, but now it's definitely Sevilla. I think I'm prepared for different--as much as that's possible, anyway. I walked the Chemin du Puy and the Camino Francés (and...

Hi Rob, I was just talking with someone who's planning a very slow Camino, which of course got me thinking about you and wondering how you were doing. I'm glad it's going well, and am looking forward to reading about it after you get back! Buen Camino, Anna-Marie

New museum/pilgrim reception centre on the way into León

Puente Castro, a suburb of León, just opened a reception and interpretive centre for pilgrims, located in the Church of San Pedro. The museum section focuses on local Roman, Christian, and especially Jewish history. The centre in general is described as a place to get information on León...

    June 2011: Nuremberg-León-Santiago de Compostela-Finisterre

Right under where it says "EDIT POST" there's a line that says "Delete post:", and then a check box. Just check the box, and then press the "Submit" button.

    After Santiago

Hi Joe, and Happy New Year to you, too. Europe is rather a large place, so it's hard to give advice without knowing what kind of things you're interested in. If you want to see a very different part of Spain, Granada is beautiful, and the Alhambra shouldn't be terribly packed with tourists in...

    Camino Frances in December.

Hi Cocolooloo, I haven't walked in December--although I'd like to someday. I recently interviewed a winter pilgrim on my blog, though. She had some trouble at the beginning, but ended up having a great experience--and found other people to walk with, in addition to the friend she started out...

    ZUBIRI - Alternative accommodation

Thanks for your input! I'm looking into it.... Anna-Marie

    ZUBIRI - Alternative accommodation

Renshaw, That's an interesting idea. I do some website design and could probably throw something (somewhat less complicated than Tripadvisor :D) together. Do you think people would use a Camino Tripadvisor-type review site? Anna-Marie

Channel 4 report on The way speaking to Martin sheen

Thanks for the link--it's a interesting interview. Has anyone seen any interviews from a pilgrim perspective, though? Having walked the Camino, I find myself wondering things like what his favourite part of the road was, and how much he actually walked during the filming, and whether he...

    walking summer 2011 limited time

Hi newwalker, What kind of camera do you have? I reluctantly decided to leave my SLR at home before my Camino. I carried my point-and-shoot (which I actually used in manual mode, and which is on the large side) in a small-ish photo bag that attached to my backpack's waist belt. In the evenings...

    walking summer 2011 limited time

Hi newwalker, The most scenic areas--as you said--obviously depend somewhat on your tastes. I can only think of two castles on the route: the ruins of one above Castrojeriz, and the Templar castle in Ponferrada. There's a monastery at Samos, and the Monasterio de Irache by the Fuente del Vino...

Bernie the German Shepherd from Castrojerez

Re: Bernie the German Sheperd from Castrojerez They had a bunch of newspaper clippings about him at the bar where he used to live (it's right on the Camino route) when I passed through two years ago--it seems he was quite famous! I can't remember if any of the clippings were in English, since...

How long to walk from St Jean to Orisson Refuge?

From what I remember, the part from Honto to Orisson is the steepest uphill part of the route over the Pyrenees. (But that's not the whole 10 kilometres, thank goodness.) How long it'll take you really depends on how fast you can walk. I'd say 2.5 to 3 hours is a good guesstimate. Buen Camino!

    Sending luggage to St Jean's

I walked the Le Puy route and had my sister (in Canada) send my guidebook for the Camino Frances to the SJPP post office a few weeks before I got to SJPP, Poste Restante (64220 St Jean Pied-de-Port). All I had to do is go to the post office and show my passport to get my small package. I don't...
