A friend I met along the Way (who was also from Pretoria, ironically) lost his jacket...because he left it on a park bench. It was the worst tragedy I witnessed in 33 days (he really liked that jacket ;)...we found a store and got him another one, though).
I found a bed every night, the...
Very true. Even high-grade commercial and military GPS requires accurate, fixed reference data to get to sub-meter accuracy on a measurement...and a few meters here or there per measurement adds up over the long haul. So, yeah, even with a good GPS device you end up just another person with a...
Thom,
Though I'll be a couple days behind you (I won't be leaving St. Jean until 8 Sept), we may cross paths somewhere along the way.
Buen (very soon) Camino

I am finding that freaking out a bit is part of the waiting process...I will only be a few days behind you and I am fighting off the urge to second guess everything.
Buen Camino sin preocupados! Hopefully I will catch up to you at some point along the way.

The lack of definite distances is an issue with trails and walking paths everywhere...just about the only thing you can guarantee when a guidebook says X km is that you will invariably measure something other than X with your GPS. Even little measurement variations between measurers can add up...
That gave me a good laugh, as I immediately imagined a team of bureaucrats with rulers and string arguing about whether to round up the last fraction of a meter to make it .601 :)
Coming from an area (Southern California) that just experienced two major brush fires, I understand how nerve wracking it can be.
May the Lord grant you all strength and courage, especially the firefighters who are in harm's way! You will certainly be in my prayers.

What SY said...also, if you are renewing your marriage vows, you'll want to carry an official copy of your Catholic marriage certificate with you. While the anniversary blessing is no big deal, most priests or deacons would want to verify that you were married in the church before renewing vows...
Halka,
No first hand experience, but from what I've read, finding gluten-free food in pilgrim menus is not very likely. You will probably need to rely on grocery shopping instead.

Very true, and an especially reprehensible ommission given that I'm (mostly) Portuguese! :)
Added the appropriate 'almost' qualifier to the previous post.
Buen Camino
Irenie,
OpenStreetMap (https://www.openstreetmap.org) has open-source, freely distributable Google-Earth style maps you could use.
Or, if you want something a little more vintage, sites like the Beinecke Digital Collections at Yale (http://brbl-dl.library.yale.edu/vufind/) have maps that are...
Regarding rising times, one thing to keep in mind is that, unlike the US where we have multiple time zones that are (more or less) in correspondence with the 'real' longitudinal time zones, (almost) all of continental Western Europe is on a single time zone. This means that Eastern Spain is on...
As Doug already mentioned, they are available in the store here on the forum...I would also add that they come free with any of the full sized guidebooks purchased from the forum store, so if you are also in the market for one of those you can kill two birds with one stone.

Also remember to add to your calculations the appropriate travel time from wherever you are flying in to SJPP and from Santiago to wherever you are flying out.
This can add a day or three, depending on the specifics of your itinerary.
Peace,
-Jason
Also, you can add your info to the following post to formally announce yourself as a September/October pilgrim:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/posts/381298/
I certainly hope it's enough time, since I have about the same schedule and am a less-physically-active 38 year old!
Seriously, though, it should be plenty of time. Paris to SJPP can be done in half a day by train, as can Santiago to Madrid. Since the walk itself can be reasonably done in 30-35...
Lee,
May the Lord bless you for what must have been a tough decision to make...I pray that you'll be able to find peace in the midst of everything. And while I won't be able to meet you in person on the Camino this September, please know that I'll be carrying your intentions along with my own...
