Last May, I had intended to take the river path, having walked that way in 2014. But I missed a turning straight after I had crossed the motorway. There was a temporary bridge, and I went straight on rather than down the steps. I suddenly realised I was wrong when I found the airport fence was...
'Or perhaps — best of all — I would have drowned out his disappointment with an enthusiasm so boundless he would have packed his own backpack and set off to the road himself.'
That is a brilliant camino inspired response.
Another thing to consider if you go with a booking company, is to know how far you want to walk each day. You can't just say 'I want to walk the camino in x days' as the company will then work out an average daily walking distance, which may or may not be suitable for you.
Also - you say you...
I was surprised as to how busy the N120 was. In 2014, I seemed to remember that it was busiest mid morning but then in the afternoon it went quiet as drivers stopped for lunch.
This year, loads of trucks were already thundering past at 6.30am when I left Villarta, and they were still thundering...
I took the bus from Grañon to Burgos in May this summer, and I noted some earthworks going on beside the N120 in that area. I wondered if it was a large new warehouse foundation or maybe a large agricultural building.
In Sept, I was on the bus back to Grañon and I was amazed by all the...
I walked the Frances in Sept 2014 and loved it so much that I decided against rewalking it straight away in case some of 'the magic' of my first walk went away. So I walked a whole series of other walks, including the Podienses, and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I was finally ready to rewalk the...
I was in Albergue Espiritu last night. Dorm with 9 beds, I think. Great, I thought, I'll have a good night's sleep. I'd not factored in that of the 7 of us, there was 1 Prize Snorer and 1 Cougher.
Someone else was at Santa Maria and the nuns were singing last night.
If you are walking from SJPP, then I would suggest that you decide whether you want to walk to Roncesvalles in one go or two. If the latter, then you need either 2 nights in SJPP unless Orisson has private rooms. Orisson gets booked up quickly, SJPP is of course very popular as a starting place...
Looking closely at google streetview, I can locate a number of landmarks shown in your photo, but the cairn seems not to be visible, although it should be. There is also a suspicious pile of cobbles close to where the cairn should be.
In both the photo and street view, the wall of the underpass...
You're almost certainly correct.
Between SJPP and Burgos I counted 6 albergues that Gronze notes are closed. So really not that many! Somehow they seemed more numerous when I was researching ealier!
Also factor in the fact that not all albergues have reopened since covid so the number of beds will be less, so a 12% increase in numbers since 2019 and a ???5% decrease in beds = a big bed race
I think that you are somewhat out of date if you think Muslims only go to mecca once in their lifetimes. Having lived in the Gulf, I know that many are repeat 'offenders' when it comes to going to Mecca. They go as often as they can. So much so that there are lotteries to decide who gets to go...
Slight tangent, but -
I'm off to walk the CF in a couple of weeks time, and have made a number of bookings, mainly because I want a private room (I snore now, something i did not do back in 2014 when I first walked the CF and absolutely loved being able to wing it.)
Pension Mavi in Los Arcos...
When I walked from Le Puy prior to covid, there were several rural gîtes that offered camping, and people camping there. But as you say, most were relying on gîtes rather than camping, especially in the towns.
So have I, back in Oct last year. Albergue de Pamplona is also called Irunako Atapea Albergue, just to complicate things.
The Ibarrola Albergue was by far the nicer of the two, much cleaner, well organised washing facilities and free tea and coffee. I will be back again in May when I restart my...
The Irunako Atapea also has pods. They are on booking.com.
I love pods as the beds are so stable. No more swaying around as someone above/below turns over.
On Booking.com. If you look at availability, there's a price for everyday in March and June onwards, but nothing in April and May.
I agree, that stretch looks like it is going to be a pinch point this year. There will be much more accommodation than appears online, but it could still easily be...
