Never heard of leech incidents, I am afraid. The only potential pesk would be ticks in areas where bush is thick, but the CF is perfectly manicured and you will not find none of that. You do not have to cross large bodies of water whatsoever, only a few rivers, and leeches do not grow in moving...
The nearest shop is probably in Ponferrada, but the suggestion by MSPATH above might actually work quite well, ask for help in any of the albergues, perhaps Tomas in Manjarin might have some walking stick or staff that he might give you, always worth asking (particularly considering you have a...
Interesting to know! but, at the same time, skipping monumental Estella, Irache and sweet Villamayor de Monjardín does not sound like a great idea, I have done the official path, and I found it beautiful, it would not be easy to beat Estella, definitely!
The heat and also the volume of heavy traffic on that road make that stretch worse than usual; one of those really high bridges on the way up to Piedrafita do Cebreiro has collapsed and the traffic along the Valcarce valley must have noticeably increased these days. Rest in peace, peregrino!
it is a pity how things are evolving regarding albergues and accommodation after COVID. In any case, please beware: August is even busier probably, maybe end of August/September might have some easier opportunities.
All I can think of is, maybe arrive in Santiago late in the afternoon, the atmosphere is a lot more bearable, and you will not find so many people!
The Francés has these things...
I personally choose arriving in Santiago after at least 40 km, and as late in the afternoon as possible, like 6 or...
Borda, incidentally, refers to any type of standalone house in the mountains, at least in some parts of Northern Spain. Orisson is still an amazing place, and the good news is that they respond at short notice if there is availability, perhaps not the friendliest of owners, but it is still an...
I saw too many loose dogs in that area a couple of months ago, every farm seems to have several of them. Also, there have been reports of wolves attacking sheep in the area, maybe that is why there are so many dogs now. Sorry to hear about what happened to you, take care!!!
indeed, the money you would spend in the taxi would probably more fun enjoying the fantastic tapas/pintxos and atmosphere in Pamplona. HOWEVER, beware this is the time for the local festival in Pamplona (famour bull running). The bull running has been cancelled this year, but finding...
That makes sense now! You will find a taxi driver outside the train station, and you will make a taxi driver very happy when you tell him you want him to bring you to SJPP. You might be lucky and might even bump into some other pilgrim coming out of the train, do not be shy and try to trick them...
Hi peregrina! My two cents as a Spaniard, you should be able to get a taxi on the spot, normally, even for a 400 mile ride to a foreign country, as it would be SJPP. Are you really sure you want to do Madrid to SJPP by taxi? Maybe I did not understand correctly, though
I did see one hospitalero voluntario in Castrojeriz, but allowed capacity changes in ranges of hours and miles, there is no such thing as a "global picture" for all caminos.
I can tell you three weeks ago, En el Camino, Boadilla, was closed. Castrojeriz was mostly closed 3 weeks ago, there was some hospitalero voluntario and A cien leguas, and a lots of signs "For Sale" and "For letting". Castilla was particularly (extremely) quiet 3 weeks ago, El Bierzo a little...
Interesting... I did see this hut, the whole area was packed with vultures, but I did not notice that stone in september 1919! When did you take the photo?
