    Dangers in the Pyrenees?

I medically treated 5 people on my last trip over the top. It was snowing and some people treat it like a walk around the park. Not carrying water was the biggest issue. 15 rescued and 1 death. Safest way is walk in a group and carry 2 littes of water. I had 3 litres and ended up giving a lot to...

    Cyclists and pedestrians

As this forum is used to share learning, I am not sure this is a hatred of bikes etc. I chose to walk rather than ride, that just happened to be my choice. Speed causing accidents, especially in areas marked for walking only and being used as a high speed downhill mountain trail. A few bikers...

    Cyclists and pedestrians

I have just completed a full camino from SJPDP. I treated three people along the way who were hit by bikes or trying to avoid them. One lady was 66 now with a cracked rib. One sprined wrist and the other was a bruise. If you listen to music, you have no chance. Most said burn camino instead of...

    Finding somewhere to sleep

Just an update... Saria onwards is easier to find a bed. No problems. Many have dropped out and there are many more places to stay now. You still need a sleeping bag for sure though.

More crowded in the albergues west of Burgos ?

It's rare they speak English. Internet seems to work. My Spanish is not to bad and even I had trouble. I got to a few places where I thought they were reserved only to find out no one wrote it down. Asking a local to call for you also seems to work.

More crowded in the albergues west of Burgos ?

They are busy right now. You can book ahead if you know where you will stay. Avoid the stopovers in common guide books as they fill fast. We just keep walking if towns are full to the next town

Jennylu, The 5e albergues are few and far between. Those that are that price have cold water, no sheets or pillow cases etc. if you don't mind sleeping on dirty mattresses, this is the place to stay. Most albergues are about 10e. Not many have cooking facilities and you have to get in quick to...

We are on the camino now, just got to Saria. We wish we had taken our tent in order to stop the daily rat race to find somewhere to stay. We passed so many great places and will be getting one while we are in town. The camino is spoiled by daily competition to find somewhere to stay. I am seeing...

    Finding somewhere to sleep

We have been trying one stop before or one stop after what briely(forgot spelling) says in his book. This has made a big difference by not following the book.

    Finding somewhere to sleep

Hi kinkyone, I wasn't meaning you :) I was walking whilst typing :) I added my comment just to point out to future ripple that I wasn't targeting sick or injured people. I just landed at another place which has just added the following, 1 no taxis or busses. Will not accept pack forwards, groups...

    Finding somewhere to sleep

Before this turns into a flame, would everyone read the initial post! It's an advisory that planning may be required. I am helping treat injured people. The place I am staying is saying things are different at the moment for the first time they have known. Trust me I know people are injured and...

    Finding somewhere to sleep

Hi, Not at Sarria as yet. More albergue a from there and a starting point for many. I should point out the touristinos phrase isn't mine, is a Spanish phrase. I am healthy and can carry a full pack, also, being in medicine, I also understand many people on the camino are not healthy or strong...

    Finding somewhere to sleep

I am on the camino at the moment. We started in France and are now 75% complete to finistare . We have found the camino has required some strategy in order to find a bed, even now in off season. There are many busses where people stop outside town and drop people off to find a bed, many bike...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Take a sleeping bag!!! No or few blankets. Freezing at night. So glad we have ours. Many buying them now on the camino. Warm clothes for night. Clothes will not dry etc. if you don't use your common sense and try the wear one wash one trip.... You will freeze and leave to go home like some have...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Went over the top three days ago. Never seen head winds like it. Allllll the way from 5 k past Orisson. Solo tired at the end. Two guys lost their packs when the wind took them over the edge. Snow walking was great. Found a pilgrim who was lost in the Forrest. It was taped off and closed... At...

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Is anyone making it over the top at all? Even with a stop in Orisson? Is it possible to get to the snow from Orisson? I have done the Hymalayas however, the person I am going with has never seen snow, so I thought it would be a treat for her. It would be worth a day out to play in the snow

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

That's our plan as well Bill. Only, a few days later. We are glad we didn't get suckered into the wear one wash one propaganda. That may work in summer but not winter. We are layering our clothing. Jet lag is a killer from Oz so Orisson is a good move. Enjoy !

IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off APRIL 2013

Re: IMPORTANT: Advice for pilgrims setting off in March 2013 I am starting on the 12/13th from SJPDP. Being an experienced mountain trekker and medical rescue team member, I would still be taking local information into account. As we should. Perhaps, the focus on taking the absolute minimum, ie...

I have read on a few sites, by those who camp, that so long as you are a certain distance from water, main roads and not on private property, it's okay to camp. I understand, low profile, "stealth" camping is the way to go. I have also read that some pilgrims have burst crops due to letting a...
