Change is the only constant; nothing is ever again what it once was. I appreciate St. James and enjoyed the service/Mass in the Cathedral, which is held in honor of the Pilgrims who finish the Camino. "Enjoyed" is an under-statement. I wept like a baby many times during the Mass. Even us poor...
Not everyone who Walks the Camino is Catholic. Some begin it as a "walk" and are surprised when it becomes a true Pilgrimage or religious experience. I don't believe in limiting it in any way. You have to make a statement when and before they give you your Compostela. That is good enough. I'm...
I notice you are from the states and if you plan on carrying your pack on board do NOT go through security with pepper spray as it is considered a "weapon". If you think you want it get it in Spain. Starting early is a good idea and difficult not to do as so many get up early and rustle around...
I had a hard time finding any hiking equipment until I got to Burgos. Maybe someone else can speak to this. Some of the home made / wooden ones are or can be heavy.
I swear by Permathrin, but understand if you can't get it in Canada then you cannot. We use it on my husbands farm pants and shirts and on our shoes and socks. others get ticks during a day in the grass/fields and we find VERY few if any. It lasts through 6 washings and I don't use really hot...
Thanks so very much, but I want to buy one for my pack. You understand I'm sure. I can't wait to hike in and around SEA with my daughter and her family. Such amazing photos they post, but many are past my ability. Thanks for your kind offer.
Flying for the airline it was Standard Operating Procedure to check the mattress seams and pillow and behind the headboard on the wall for the critters. We found them occasionally and the hotel was GLAD to know! Many times the welts and evidence doesn't come on for a day or two who you can never...
Quality of the roads- Varried. In Galacia there is a lot of slate/shale rock and when it is wet or dry it is slippery. Many places stones are mixed with dirt/sand. There is water here and there. When going through a wet spot/mud they are invaluable. I don't use them when on a portion of road...
I also found they helped avoid knee pain. Sometimes on the downhill we don't take as much care in "placing" our feet and when the ligaments are fatigued it's easy to blow out a knee. I saw that happen on the down hill most of the time. Also, I use a stretchy, arthritis glove. They are light...
haha I'm sure you will always know! Being a Wyoming girl I say, "Yep, Nope and Howdy" too. I call important things I carry, "loot" When I flew with lots of people from Atlanta I picked up "Y'all" If I was young I would want to study Linguistics. Language is a "hoot!"
I was given a pole by a German lady on my first Camino. It helped me with balance. I had a bad episode of Vertigo on a layover with the Airline I worked for once and it seems to be with me occasionally even today-10 years later. I find that I need them if I'm walking on an uneven path and want...
@t2andreo - When I hiked my first Camino I was out of shape, but I was hiking it for my heart, which was broken. The second time I hiked it I had to turn around as my back was bad from an injury. After back surgery two years ago I'm back on the trails here in NH. I was struck by your comment...
I really believe a wind shirt is the answer. When it's windy the heat can be depleted quickly. The old, extremely simple ones are hard to find. I have an old wind shirt I bought for skiing back in 1979. I'd never part with it. (obviously) hehe
Some people don't sweat like others. I sweat! No matter what I wear, I wash it. My "big" issue is the undergarments. Supportive ones don't dry well or quickly. I've always got one flapping in the breeze like a Solo Flag!
T2andreo, I found your Overview to be spot on! I'm getting a poncho. I almost hesitate to ad this fact, but I will. . . During my Camino the end of April and the month of May in 2008, I had TWO DAYS OF RAIN only. In Galacia it was intense, but only 2 days. Amazing.
