Because Spanish people have a few days off during the Semana Santa (the Holy week) and many of them decide to walk a a part of the Camino then. Especially in the 'bottleneck' between SJPdP and Pamplona there are no beds available, so anyone who walks the Camino in that week: be sure you made...
Some ideas about your shoes:
1. Put laces with a striking colour in your shoes
2. Bind your shoes together with your laces
3. Cut a piece of an old credit card (or similar), punch a hole through it with a hole punch and write your phone number on it with a permanent marker, so in case somebody...
@dick bird: yes, the spindryers we use for people who prefer handwashing their laundry are always a place of interest; especially people from the USA and Korean people have never seen a thing like that. And they are always amazed when they see how much water it takes out!
Or, how dirty the...
When it is very busy and when a hospitalero is not very, very attentive it occurs that one sock stays in the washing machine. I always tell new hospitaleros to check and doublecheck when they take out the laundry from the machine, otherwise the sock comes in the next laundry of another pilgrim...
It is quite busy and will be busier tomorrow. Due to the strikes in France there were no trains last Thursday, so many people had to rebook
their treinticket.
I am in the albergue of Roncesvalles at the moment. Yesterday morning we had snow in the Pyrenees, and the rest of the day pouring rain. Today rain again, pilgrims arrive in the albergue cold and wet, so be prepared with poncho and adequate rain protection for your backpack!
Yes, the pass opens April 1st, but can be closed in case of heavy snowfall; in that case you will have to take the Valcarlos route. The volunteers at the Pilgrims Office in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port will give you an adequate advice.
I will be happy to welcome you at Roncesvalles, will be working...
You'd better book also Roncesvalles, Easter is always a very busy weekend and Roncesvalles will fill up early then. I will be working there as a hospitalera until Friday 15th, so I will be away when you arrive; nevertheless: buen Camino!
As for Orrisson: although the Route Napoleon opens...

Jeffrey, you'll also be welcome in Roncesvalles; I will be working there as a hospitalera in that period. So if you have any questions, put them here or ask me in April ;-)
The route Napoleon over the Lepoeder pass will be opened as from April 1st if the weather permits, otherwise the Valcarlos...
Hello Emma from Perth and David from Sidney. Welcome in the monastry of Roncesvalles where I will be one of the hospitaleros in that period. Enjoy your walk over the Pyrenees, start early, don't carry too much stuff with you and drink lots of water!
I am a hospitalero in Roncesvalles right now. It has been raining for weeks and weeks. Listen to the advice of the pilgrims office in Saint Jean Pied de Port and when you have the choice between the 4 hour descent and the 1 hour descent, do take the 4 hour descent! The other one is very steep...
In Roncesvalles (where I work as a hospitalera every year) this item is always a point of attention. Every new group of hospitaleros (groups change every two weeks) must organise a fire-alarm excercise with the fire-hoses. On every dormitory there are powder extinguishers.
There are smoke...
