Bonjour à tous, From Monique (my wife) and your humble servant in Brazil, in front of Iguaccu Falls... something else than the Camino Francès but both unforgettable experiences !

    Hi From the Simpsons

Buen Camino the Simpsons. Tell me all about your route from Oporto when you come back as I am planning this route from Lisbon next spring. As far as I know refuges in Portugal are scarce but many hostals and pensions exist. Once in Spain you will see refuges along the way. Have fun.

    Starting my (mental) journey

I am 65 and I did the Camino Francès in 2 stages over 2 years. I am an ordinary guy, I do some training to keep my cardio vascular system in some sort of shape. I plan to do the route from Lisbon to Santiago in April 2008. Except for the available time, when you are decided to go, the...

    electricity

Not knowing what type of battery you have I can tell you that a simple and very lightweight battery charger will work on 110 to 230 volts and charge your AA or AAA batteries in a snap. Failing that, buy your non rechargeable batteries in Spain as you go.

    Confessions of a couch potato

Buen Camino Greenshank. It will be quite a shock between the buzzing of Barajas and the peace on the camino... once out of Madrid of course. Have fun.

one week, opinion on where to start?

We are assuming you want to go on the Camino Francès. You could also walk from La Coruna to Santiago or from Porto to Santiago. You have a choice. Enjoy whatever you decide and take your time; you might or might not ever come back to this part of the world.

one week, opinion on where to start?

If you have 7 days (incl flights) and if you are in good shape, leave from Sarria (100km). This will allow you reasonable walking days and mostly one day to visit Santiago and to taste some of the good food at reasonable prices.

    first camino

Buen Camino to you. I sincerely hope you will fight hard not to get too immersed in the race for beds and therefore missing the real spirit of the Camino. So many places and things can be missed by rushing but I understand also the adrenaline rush at the thought of not having a roof over your...

    New pilgrim

Welcome Connie. You will find all you need to know on this forum if you read a lot and ask many questions. When you say you leave on June 1 but you are incertain how to go about it, you must be rather well prepared as there is less than 3 weeks left... In any event just listen to...

    Irish Pilgrim

I am sure you will find something about yourself, and others, on the Camino Bright Eyes. Being retired, people and friends also asked me why I was doing this; some, I'm sure, believed I turned nuts upon leaving my job... I still don't know to this day why I did this, but I think everyday...

    camino frances June 23rd

Stayceynicole you will not be alone. You will meet many pilgrims and arriving in Santiago at the end of July, the camino will be like an "autobahn" around Munich at 8 am on a week day in October... Buen Camino and come back to tell us your experiences.

new pilgim..anyone off to festival of st sara? foot advice?

In 2005 I had terrible blisters problems. In 2006 I tried a cream called "NOK Akilene" (grey plastic tube) and made by Asepta. It is made in France and should be available in UK. It really did work for me. Everyday I washed my feet and in the morning before leaving I would massage my toes...

    best and worst!

The best: entering the cathedral in Santiago; walking alone in the early morning with birds singing; an Austrian young man offering me cleaned and cool grapes on a sun baked trail before Burgos; the hospitaleras in Roncevales; arriving on top of OCebreiro. The worst: 3 days with bed...

    PEI-les

PEI les, 2 holes in my belt in fall 2006... but back to "normal" again  I am glad to see that we are several with the camino junkie syndrome. EVERYDAY I think about people and places that I met on the Camino. I sometimes worry that I could suffer from some mental problems; it is...

leaving from Burgos- 2 week walk

The best route from Boston is to fly direct to Madrid (Continental, US Air....). Other routes (Paris or London) may be cheaper but you have to be prepared to wait for connections in terminals, both going and coming back. From the airport a short bus/subway or taxi to Avenida de Americas bus...

    Washing clothes

The more polyester in your fabric the better for drying purposes. Well worth spending more to speed drying. With 9 days of continuous rain last year, my Tshirts could dry inside overnight. Cotton stuff did not dry overnight. With 40°C on the Meseta I had to wash daily; drying fast is...

Starting in Barritz or Pau ??

From Biarritz/Bayonne airport you can take a bus or a taxi to the train station in Bayonne (15 minutes by taxi). At the train station you take a small "tchoo tchoo" to St JPdeP trough a beautiful valley. You could also start walking from Bayonne to Hendaye or to St JPdeP, across the Pyrénées...

    May - June 2007 trip

With you walking experience you might not need much advice. For the Camino Francès I read anything I could get my hands on from an historical point of view of northern Spain. A good guide showing all stages and all kinds of information is a good investment. I really appreciated the one by...

    Camino Frances July/August

I walked the Camino Francès in sept and found it was quite busy, especially on week ends as many Spaniards arrive to walk during that periods. Mondays to Fridays were somewhat acceptable. Nonetheless I did get to find the odd refuge where there was just a few people. I even managed to get the...
