I started in Biarritz and enjoyed the walk from there to Irun. If you don't start in Biarritz I would definately start in Irun as the walk from there to SS is very nice with some great views. Whatever you decide I am sure you will enjoy as the Norte is a lovely camino.
Bilbao is a must to stay a day and I would echo those who mentioned the Tito Bustillo caves. The tours were fully booked when 2 of us called in. Said we were pilgrims and they arranged for us to go on a tour. Amazing to see. Llanes is another lovely town with a lot to see.
Mondonedo is very good. Lots of bars and cafes. Municipal albergue is managed by the police and you need to report to police station first to pay and get your passport stamp.. Albergue is very clean but no closing time. When I was there people stayed up late talking & drinking. In the end I had...
I walked the Norte last May/June and went for a swim (without bathing suit) just to say I had swum in the Atlantic. It was freezing. I would not bother taking swimmers as if you really want a swim go in your undies or with nothing.
I walked the Norte from Biarritz last May/June. Stayed at Auberge de Juenesse in Biarritz which was fine. E26 included breakfast. Auberge has bar, kitchen, laundry & internet. Made the mistake of walking to Irun in one day as it was a walk of approx. 36km, and quite hot, and the Frenchman I was...
Walked Norte May/June 2015 and in Bilboa stayed at Ganbera hostel which is located in the old town and handy to cathedral and museum and 50 metres from metro station.. Cost was E17.50 per night which covered linen and blankets, free wifi, free breakfast and tea & coffee all day and individual...
Currently walking Norte. While at Guemes (2 June) a number of pilgrims picked up bedbugs. Also heard a couple of days ago that others had experienced bugs prior to this. 2 nights later 3 of us were in room 3 at Camping Santillana. One person woke at 11.30pm yelling out she had bugs all over...
Hi Jodipup,
What I do is type in www.gronze.com. Site comes up - El Camino del Norte- Gronze.com. Right click on this. Box comes up with various headings, one of which is Translate with Bing. Click n this and site comes up in English. Hope it works for you. Cheers
Like Angela I am also planning the Norte for a mid May 2014 start in Bayonne or Biarritz. Am sure there will be a number of pilgrims starting around this time. Am always happy to walk with others or meet at the end of the day.
