I don't know that there is an official start point and if so, who chose it and why? I suspect as your journey on the Norte continues you will soon become frustrated with the official route and seek out the wonderful alternate routes that exist. However, if you think a month from now when you're...
That bridge was pretty terrifying though it is perfectly safe - guard rails etc. you're not going to fall off but it is still nerve wracking. The two aspects that made it tough for me was that the walking path was two way and had bicyclists. And the vehicle traffic speeding by you (a fence...
I did it last July and it was great except for a few terrifying encounters with guard dogs. If the weather is bad I would skip it, it's very exposed on top.
Last summer it took me 7hr and 5 min to complete this section. I think that time includes stopping for lunch. I walked the ridge line section of this trail.
Your results may vary.
I just completed the Norte (from Irun )about a week ago and walked the entire route in Chacos trekking sandals, with toe socks. I didn't carry any other footwear.
Chacos were great! I met many people in shoes and boots who were struggling with blisters along the way. I only had one blister...
I just completed the Norte in 31 days, from Irun to Santiago. I walked the river route out of Bilbao and it was fine. I walked to Oviedo and then back to Aviles, so avoided Gijon but it added a day. You have enough time to start walking and just see how you do. Start slow and eventually you will...
In the end I decided to skip Arzua and walked the Norte until the Breas connection with the Frances and then continued on to Lavacolla. It was a very long day but glad I got a bit on the Frances as I ran into a Norte pilgrim I hadn't seen in a few weeks.
I ended up doing the route that goes via Cruces after starting in Baamonde. It is as described above, in particular the omelette was excellent and pavement walking was not excellent.
It took me 7 hours (including breaks) and was around 32k. The monastery is an excellent Albergue and I highly...
I think I just had bad timing with the dogs. In the case of the second he had a large territory to guard and the cows just happened to be grazing nearby when I passed.
Hi- In a few days I will be traveling between Baamode and Sobrado and am interested in the shorter route between the two towns that goes via Cruces. Has anyone done this recently and have feedback? Or if you have done both can you offer a comparison?
Just about a week left for me on the Norte...
I didn't come across anything resembling what you describe. There was one small section where I had to step down and used my hand to brace myself. But it was nothing I would consider challenging. There were some rocky sections, like in this picture.
Last night I slept in Soto and spent way too much time researching and trying to decide which route I would take out of town. I didn't stay at the Albergue (instead, the wonderful Paulino for 20eur for a private room!) so I missed the talk from Pepe about the routes.
I was on the fence until I...
Thanks for the info Dave! I ended up taking the regular route. After looking through that wikiloc track I felt it would add too much to today's walk, which was pretty long as is.
Hey Dave- do you know if the coastal path out of Salinas is significantly longer than the official route? I am planning on walking from Salinas to Soto de Luina tomorrow which will be a long day as is. Don't want to add on a bunch of kms, if possible.
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip! Have you done this section?
I do think I will stay in Arzua as there is a hotel there I liked and if I am short on time I know I can make it from Arzua to Santiago in one day.
