Camino Mozarabe.
1. The original is from Granada - Cordoba - Merida where it joins the Vdlp.
2. There is also an alternate one from Malaga - Cordoba - Merida.
3. There is an extended one from Almeria to Granada.
I have not tried the last one. If you have one week, then I think Granada to...
When I was there in 2008, I was lucky to arrived at noon on Sunday (short day) and the hospiterlero told me the museum was free on Sunday. Can't remember if that extends to the forum and the ruins but it definitely cheaper on Sunday.
It is interesting that this crossing has become the baptism for the via de la Plata.
In 2008 I managed to find a fallen tree trunk 50 meters to the left and crossed it without getting wet. In retrospect, I would be nice to see how deep it was.
So yes, I have in a way cheated and skipped the...

Hi Stephen,
Via de la Plata is mostly flat until one passed the town of Pueblo de Sanabria. Then it is similar to the Camino Frances going into Galicia.
There is an alternative route further down at A Gudina that goes to Verin instead of to Laza. Both routes then join back before Ourense. I...
Woa! No need to take it out on tourgrims, taxigrims and holidaygrims. These people have been around ever since the camino started. I think they are called the rich, aristocrats and royalty back in those days. Just focus on one's own camino.
Here we are only talking about a electronic guide to...
At 325 MB this app is huge! I assume that all the photos and directions are already build in so you probably don't need to incur additional charges for data.
I've already walk the VDLP but it would be really nice if there is a similar app for the Camino Norte.
Hi Laurie,
There is a new albergue (2008) in Zamora. On the way to Zamora, cross the bridge, head towards the church in the middle of the city center. The albergue is next to the church.

There was an albergue in Funte de Cantos in 2008, unless they have closed it. I remember only having to stay in a hostel in Monesterio, Zafra, and one other place because the albergue was closed for that year.
Congratulations Isabelle.
I can understand how you feel not continuing to Finisterre. The last 200 km in via Plata is a killer after the nice flat plains. And the weather was cold and wet in Spring! Can't imagine it now...
Isabelle,
I hope you enjoy Zamora (in another day or 2) as much as Salamanca. The albergue is new and the kitchen facilities is excellent (as with all new albergues).
As noted, you have the admiration and respect from every pilgrim in this forum who has seen what you have gone through. In...
I blogged about my via de la plata last year.
Yes, Calzada de Valdunciel's is a nice place and the librarian is so friendly.
You can check out my blog for the period between late april to june 2008. Hopefully it will provide more information for you in your next leg of your camino.
Buen...
Water is ok. Just that the pots, pans and utensils are sometimes lacking or dirty.
I usually buy lots of muesli bars. They are light, easy to carry and a great regular emergency energy source.
If twitter is your only requirements, then you may probably want to get a local prepaid sim card and a cheap starter phone (30-40 euro) over there. Those are usually unlocked. Even the cheapest phone and prepaid card can get you on the internet.
To save bandwidth, use...
Don't worry about timing on the Plata. There are no rush for beds. Only once in my 40 days on the Plata did I encounter not enough beds.
Even for an old tortoise walking on average 4 km an hour, one will still make 32 km in 8 hours. Assuming one starts walking at 7 am in the morning, arrival...
Don't forget to try the hotspring in Ourense. It's free. Less than a Euro by tram from Plaza Major. Or you can walk there in the morning (cross the huge old bridge, turn left immediately around 1 km). For the 1 km detour you get to invigorate your body and still be on time to Cea for a siesta.
Andrew,
There is not many choices since you wanted to be in south and only have 8 days. Have a look this spreadsheet of my camino via de la plata this year.

For that I'll say maybe Monesterio to Merida (5 days).
The bar is basic, no expresso machine but the Galician white wine is great. A definite place to stop. Here's Luis and a new welcome sign I did for him in Chinese (bottom). I think he is going to run out of space to hang the shells pretty soon.
