I would also recommend Bici:map, used it myself a few years ago. It's also good for walkers as it shows the walking trail, recommended bike alternatives and road bike route.
You could be lucky and have perfect cycling weather, but at this time of year nothing can be guaranteed. You will have shorter days and cold nights. Near anywhere with "barro" in the name, tracks need avoiding after rain as "barro" means mud. It would be sensible to use the roads instead as...
Our Spanish friend said the route is best from Merida onwards. We started from Seville (on bikes) but we admit he was right. In May the flowers were wonderful and especially between Merida and Salamanca.
We biked the VdlP at the end of May beginning of June this year. We expected heat in Seville and colder in the north, but we got the opposite. Overall the weather was perfect with only 20 minutes of rain in 17 riding days. The flowers in my avatar are a taster of the flowers you will see in...
Just an update on the bici map. We have just returned from the VDlP. We found the map to be excellent. It was easy to follow the route and the few mistakes we made were our own fault for not being careful enough to spot arrows at junctions. With the map it was easy to remedy our mistakes.
A...
We are biking the VdlP starting on 15 May and are taking our very light weight Decathlon bags. We used them last year on the Frances and found them OK, using blankets also on some occasions. You need to balance the weight carried with the use you make of them (e.g. how often will blankets not...
As I haven´t used it yet I cannot comment on the accuracy, but the guide is mainly maps showing the route for bikes, with alternatives. It also shows the "official" route which is not recommended for bikes which I presume is the walking route.
The guide gives information on accommodation and...
As I said in my post we hope to do the VdlP in May/June, unfortunately my husband has just broken a rib (running not biking) and we hope it will have repaired sufficiently by the end of May.
If we get away then I will definitely let you know what we think about the guide and any...
Have just purchased a new guide to biking the Via de la Plata (1st published in Feb. this year).
It is in Spanish but the maps look very clear. It also has information on accommodation, bike shops etc. which is easy to follow. It may be of use for walking the VdlP also.
I will be using it in...
Thanks for all the above responses. I think I will order the book. I intend to do the VDLP next May/June by mountain bike, so long distances between stages are not such a problem.
Has anyone seen/used the guide to the Via de la Plata produced in 2011 by the Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Sevilla.
Any comments on this guide would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks for your info.
We hope to ride the route towards the end of October. As we live in Spain we can spend as long as necessary on the trip, but our days will be determined by where the accommodation is. We have just ridden the Camino Frances over 13 days, but some of those days we cut...
Davroos
I notice that you RODE the VDlP. What info did you use? Did you ride the actual caminos or did you use the roads? Did you have any problems anywhere along the route? We hope to ride the route towards the end of October, do you foresee any problems at this time of year?
Thanks for...
We have recently completed the Camino Frances by bike. Although we think we may have had a better experience walking, due to our circumstances we are better riding bikes. We are now looking at riding the Via de la Plata, starting maybe middle to end of October. We live in Spain so travel...
