Do you carry an umbrella for the Camino?

Nope! I find my poncho fine in wet weather and my hat when it's sunny.

    Bed sheets

It's not a "if" but rather a when!

    Bed sheets

Nope, that means I've done my due diligence, when near NYC I stay at Mautock no, I do my due diligence when near NYC, I stay in Montauk. No bed bugs, just a few mosquitos.

    Bed sheets

In my experience, you have a better chance of being bitten at a five star hotel in New York City, than an albergue on the Camino. Though, the introduction of the critters is basically the same. International travelers put their suitcases on the bed to sort through their things...thus bed bugs...

    Bed sheets

My question to you is: "Have you ever been bit by a bed bug on Camino?" I have not. Though, as a mental comfort, I can see the reality of it. I personally bring my own pillow to hotels, on occasion. The occasion is when I know the hotel isn't the best but the only one available. If you really...

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

Of course, you must be a authentic Hokie to get it right.

Trekking Poles Turned Me into the Flash

I started my first Camino with my AT staff. I figured if it were good enough on the 2,164 miles/3483km of the AT, the CF would be a snap. Well, snap, it was. As I made it down the far side of the Alto del Perdon, in a storm, my right leg was trapped in between two large rocks, and my staff...

Changing horses in the middle of the Camino

If you know you carry too much...that's half the battle. That said, now remove the "too much"!

Changing horses in the middle of the Camino

There are many ways to relieve you of your gear. Bus compartments being easiest. You put in your pack, board to get a good seat, the thief waits, you get settled, he lifts your pack. Solution, add your pack as driver is about to close the compartment. My pack is small enough to be a carry on.

Changing horses in the middle of the Camino

Wait, I remember in Longrono at the albergue municipal, where the bunks are cheek by jowl, someone cried out, “Please, mooossseee, over a bit. Did @mspath leave her moose there?

Fantastic! Truly a Camino lesson well understood.

Changing horses in the middle of the Camino

I thru-hiked the AT in 1996 and my first Camino was 2008. The Forum, I believe, began in 2004. The Forum is LIGHT YEARS ahead of where it was then. Ivar's tenacity and stewardship results in what you and many find to be the most complete on line guide to the Camino. As to my poor choices in...

Changing horses in the middle of the Camino

When I set out on my first Camino, I basically began with the hiking gear I used on the Appalachian Trail: Merrell hi-top Boots, sleeping bag, external pack, water purification system, rain jacket, walking sticks. By Pamplona it became obvious the Merrells had to go. My ankles were sore and feet...

How do you wear a hat with a backpack?

As I mentioned earlier, as an ocean lifeguard we didn't worry about a dark tan. Now, the search for clothing, hats and SPF lotions is hot. One area that, I believe, is misunderstood is the SPF ratings and associated costs. When used correctly, sunscreen with SPF values between 30 and 50 % offers...

How do you wear a hat with a backpack?

As an ocean/large lake lifeguard...our tan and zinced nose were badges of honor. To get a really dark tan we mixed iodine and baby oil. Now that was a tan! Today, I realize that youthful hubris isn't always the best policy.

How do you wear a hat with a backpack?

Rereading your original question, and giving in to my overdeveloped sense of humor...”Ive never seen a hat wearing a backpack!” Now to my underdeveloped sense or propriety. I was an ocean lifeguard (as were my children) we all had well developed tans. In my later year's, I've had minor...

Mens or Unisex Sarong for walking in August

I wore a sarong in Tonga, more as a cultural thing than a necessity, though my hosts appreciated it. The settings I found myself in presented some unique opportunities to be creative. When walking through fields, or vegetation, I could grab the hem and slip it through my waist band and create...

That's why he arrived in the Philippines instead of China.

    Compass and GPS

My Apple watch has a similar feature but it alerts me about a fall and, if I respond I am OK, it doesn't follow through with EMS. My daughter is the ICE on my phone. I do not want her to know I've gotten injured, but she set the watch and I don't know how to turn it off.
