It's definitely a good start. Once you have the layering idea it becomes much easier.
I'll own up to being a gram counter, and was surprised how much containers for things (eg glasses, money, toiletries, waist pack) can add up in weight. I am lucky to manage with just one extra pair which...
A good list, and we're all different. These are things I've taken in the past, but not now:
Spork
smartish blouse for evening - perhaps equivalent to your peasant blouse
String
torch
hand sanitizer (there's sanitiser out in many albergues and other places)
I've never taken pegs, battery unit...
If not too late just a warning that new boots even exactly the same model and size, are not necessarily the same. I prevaricated over whether to resole my Meindl boots or buy new ones. It seemed to make sense to buy new. After several miles breaking in time, just before Camino, they were still...
Another vote here for the Osprey Tempest series. Mine is 20l with three stretch and three zip pockets which felt just right. Added bonus is that you can carry an A4 document such as a Compostela flat in the space meant for a hydration bladder!
Late to this, but realise that my experience with the Osprey Tempest 20l might be helpful as I'm about the same height, weight and age as you. Also aim to pack as light as possible to save hips, knees etc
I bought mine about ten years ago in a specialist outdoor shop where they fitted and...
I invested in 3 lightweight bits of kit, which have been used a lot:
Marmot Precip rain jacket 269 gm; Exped Fold 22l dry bag 28gm (all clothing and bedding compressed into this, and it could hold everything in my pack so I didn’t need a rain cover or poncho); Sea to Summit Airlite towel...
I left my super, expensive, combined shampoo and conditioner bar behind at an albergue, and replaced it with a bar of Pears soap which did for washing hair, body and clothes. I normally use conditioner but going without for a few weeks was surprisingly OK.
It's a good list and nice to see that you've counted all the little bits that add up. Very useful comments so far. A few thoughts:
I think two bras is enough, as unless your desperately unlucky or very fastidious you should be able to pick when you wash them.
Could you wear next days walking...
4.552 k first time
4.339 k second time.
Small older woman, 20 l pack. Silk sleeping bag liner + down blanket. Doesn't include weight of water or any food. Spring/autumn caminos. Minimising pack weight to give me the freedom of carrying my own pack, hence gram-counting.
I own a boiler suit and love wearing it for painting and messy DIY jobs. It had just come out of the wash when this post appeared. Looking at it with fresh eyes as it hung on the clothesline, I could see how it might work on camino.
1. There's a long thin pocket down one leg which would be...
Inspired partly by all the positive comments about merino in this forum, I started looking for another merino top as a replacement for an ageing one which I bought in a special offer ("when it's gone it's gone") in a discount supermarket chain. I found similar tops in outdoor stores running at...
Yes, there is such a thing as a waterproof trekking trousers. Paramo Cascada claim to be so. Very expensive though. I'm sure other top end outdoor companies do them.
I have a pair of cheap Decathon overtrousers. They were a bit sweaty and uncomfortable, definitely not good for all day wear...
Unused Camino 1-
third blouse for evening, no-one dresses up
spork
paperback book - preferred to explore, talk, contemplate
most meds, so took fewer next time
sunscreen - long sleeves and trousers and big hat plus facecream with SPF gave me good protection
Unused Camino 2-
ear plugs, sleep mask...
Just in case you don't know:
You can use baggage transport as and when (or if) you need it. You just need to decide the night before, and have some sort of container in which stuff can be transported.
Practically every town in Spain has a "Bazar Chines" or similar name. These are remarkable for...
Containers of any sort add weight, as you've already found with the packing cubes. An oversized dry bag is no problem as it can be compressed down - you don't need a special compression dry bag.. Mine is normally compressed to less than half size for clothes and sleep system, but can hold...
As well as having essentials to hand while walking, my main concerns are about security especially while travelling before and after camino. Plus, as a fellow peregrina kindly put it, I have a special talent for losing things.
My system in slightly different to others:
Spare cash, credit card...
Just tried it round my neck. Surprisingly warm and comfortable, slightly fetching even. Too small to make any other type of wearable I think. But the possibilities of a whole bedsheet........
Somewhere in the depths of this forum there’s a reference to keeping the disposable pillowcases (provided in some albergues) to use as a mat in showers. In Ponte de Lima albergue, where no bed covers are provided, a very experienced French pilgrim in the next bed calmly slipped one onto her...
