Not even 5 minutes ago, just after my wife got back from our local Costco here in Canada, I asked if they had the Merino tops and long bottoms in stock again and she noted that they were indeed in stock! We each bought a pair of these "long johns" last fall and wore them all winter! They go in...
I'm in agreement with some of the other commenters that 68L is much larger than needed. I used a 40L Gregory Zulu pack in 2019 and had room to spare. However, it weighs 1.3 kg/1300g, or slightly more than the one you chose. https://www.gregorypacks.com/packs-bags/day-packs/zulu-40-1115ZUL40.html...
Just visited the Vodafone Portugal website and quickly ended up at this English language page for travellers. A month plan with phone, data with international calling is €20. https://www.vodafone.pt/en/products-services/visiting-portugal.html?i_id=personalizacao-eng-travellers#phone-SIM-card
I...
Both times we've been to walk, arriving in Madrid first time and Porto, the second time, we got Vodaphone SIMs, usually at an airport kiosk, and the people there are very good at swapping out the SIM, setting it up, and making sure your original SIM is packed safely so you don't lose it when you...
Great job!
I found this wonderful website, The Lighter Pack, where you can input the weight of all your individual items and then analyze what you’ve got and what needs to be pared down.
this is my list (although I never completely filled in all the weights!) for my Portuguese coastal Camino in...
This recent article sheds some science on trekking poles. It’s a roundup of scientific studies related to the use of poles over the last 40 years.

Postscript on this September's Portuguese Coastal Camino: My wife used my older 1.5L Camelbak and I used a newer 2L Camelbak that was given to me. She filled hers and I only put 1.5L in mine, to limit weight. It was not overly hot this Sept/Oct on the Coastal route (max about 20C). We did not...
Tried something different on this Camino, from which I've just returned, and that was an audiobook on my iPhone. (We took our iPads last time, only phones this time). During quiet stretches of walking, my wife and I agreed to put on our audiobooks and just walk. Then we'd talk about the books we...
I use Leki branded poles with cork handles that have anti-shock springs inside that help absorb the shock of each step. They are fully adjustable in height with markings. In another thread here in the forums I provided a number of links to scientific research that showed the benefits of using...
This webpage links to a number of scientific studies on the effect of walking poles.
https://www.cooperinstitute.org/2011/02/do-trekking-poles-make-a-difference/
I searched the last of the referenced studies and the abstract is clear that there is significant reduction in impact on joints and...
Great insight into a great company. It’s true isn’t it that really good companies always have extraordinary people at the helm? Will see how my new Gregory pack performs over my small Deuter from my Camino Frances in 2016 and compared to my very small Osprey!
I carried a 1.5L hydration bag in my daypack on the CF in 2016 and my wife carried bottles. I never ran out with a full 1.5L while walking between Ponferrada and SdC. My wife had to ask to get her bottles out to drink, or take her pack off, and got mildly dehydrated on occasion. Having the...
The Valcarce River just west of Villafranca, where I met the fisherman and the big brown under the Sarria bridge...The sign reads "Fishing Boundary" I think...Surely the shop in Sarria sold licenses!
In June of 2016, I was about an hour west of Villafranca del Bierzo when my spidey fishing sense stopped me in my tracks to ponder the possibilities of fly fishing the Valcarce River. Sure enough I met a local walking toward me donned in a similar outfit to what I would have on while pursuing...
I used Google Translate a number of times, but especially in Galicia where some places we stayed there was definitely a language barrier. GT was able to do basic translations from English to Galician.
Assuming someone else in the family also has an Apple device, she can also use built in FaceTime App to call someone else's Mac, iPhone or iPad. Wifi is quite widespread in villages along the CF. Sometimes the speed/bandwith is a little slow though. I made FaceTime Audio calls which require less...
That looks good for the price, and you can charge two USB devices at the same time. I'm still a little bit weary of third party chargers which tend to not have the sophisticated circuitry and can lead to problems. See
http://www.digmodo.com/generic-versus-genuine-wall-car-chargers-worth-the-cost
Working at an Apple Premium Service Store we see examples of cheap third party chargers that do not have the proper circuitry and fry the Apple product.
Your Apple charger will detect the voltage 110/220 so all you need is an inexpensive wall adapter in Europe that you can buy at home and bring with you to plug your charger and cable into. The iPhone 4S uses the old Apple 30 pin cable. I would take an extra one of those just in case.
