I modified mine to be more like an internal frame pack by inserting a piece of rigid ABS the same size as the foam, between the foam and the pack body. Much improved! Now I don't have to worry about how I pack it.

If the poles don't have points or sharp tips but instead have rubber tips and/or the big rubber feet does that make a difference? (to the TSA in my case)

Some people love Altras even though the tops are not very durable and shred over time - this is their biggest complaint. That and zero drop which is def not for everyone.
