    getting sick

Sadly, it appears many have learned nothing from COVID. If people around us are clearly sick and unwilling to protect those around them by masking, it becomes 100% incumbent on us to protect ourselves by masking. And to think someone else is responsible to keep us safe is now just proving naive.

Tibial fracture after 600 km on French Camino

An easy and effective way to build up supportive muscles that can help avoid shin splints (and it can be done while sitting on your duff while watching a movie or while reading the Camino Forum!): Sit on a chair, feet flat on floor, knees at 90 degrees. Keeping heel on ground, raise and lower...

What exercises to do to strengthen lower back?

"My leg strength is not as issue as I regularly ride 500-600km a week with 2000 to 4000m of climbing." That is fine if you are cycling the Camino, but with only 6 weeks until you start, make sure you train for actual walking. Other than adding to your general strength and fitness, cycling and...

    Breast Cancer & Oral Chemo

I am a recently retired oncology pharmacist. I can certainly help. I will send you a private note.

Any Advice about how to strengthen my knees for down hills.

I mean glutes (maximus and medius), adductors, hip flexors, psoas, quadriceps, deep core... Strengthening all adds stability that takes pressure off the joints.

Any Advice about how to strengthen my knees for down hills.

Barring any foot misalignment problems (which many of us have), the most common cause of knee problems is weak hips. The poster who spoke of soreness on outside of knees going downhill described an iliotibial (IT) band problem. The IT band does not stretch, so no amount of stretching will fix...

    Are magnesium tablets worthwhile?

I have used Nuun dissolvable tablets prior to triathlons on hot days. Because once you cramp it is too late. But timing is everything because the caution re: laxative effect is real. 🤪

    Taping for Prevention

I have never used any type of tape either preventatively nor after the fact for blisters. I have never had a blister. What I did use preventatively was Body Glide, which looks a bit like a dry deodorant stick. I rub it around my heel, top of my foot, tops, bottoms, and between toes. Of all...

Albergue windows and doors open or closed at night now.

Seriously? Indeed, maybe no one will know. But you'd know you were potentially infecting a plane full of people. Are you saying you’d be OK with that? This is why the pandemic will just keep cycling. Apparently it’s all about me, me, me. No concern for others.

    heel pain

Sounds like a post-tibialis tendon injury. I have partially torn mine twice. See a physio. There are very specific exercises for this. Recovery can be very fast, but it is not a problem you want to take with you on a Camino. They can also teach you the proper way to tape it with KT tape...

Question (about walking poles) for older walkers

Exactly. I saw only a few people holding the poles correctly—inserting your hand from below, then dropping your hand and and letting the strap take the weight of your hand. Held that way, nothing more than an extremely light grip is needed. In fact you barely need to close your hand around...

    Should I pack backup eyeglasses?

Having seen someone fall face-first onto rocks, my tendency would be to “yes”.

Recommendations for Foot Glide to Prevent Blisters During Camino Walk

In Canada I buy Body Glide at Mountain Equipment Co-op. Available at other sport stores as well. I read about people saying how expensive it is, but I didn’t find it so. Especially when the trade-off is no blisters, not having to buy any Compeed, tape, bandages... Sorry—edited for price...

LIVE from the Camino Injury Advice

Whether running or walking, the hardest thing on the knees is going downhill, and most people forget to train the legs for downhill. I think that is why we read about so many people on the forum saying their Camino ended in the first week. The descents from Roncesvalles, Zubiri, Alto Perdon are...

    CPAP Machines and Albergues

Oh my goodness. I apologize for anything I said that could be so upsetting to you. I in fact love albergues and agree 100% that they are for all! I enjoy them and almost always sleep amazingly well in them. Earplugs and rhythmic breathing are great tools. I was, in my original post...

    CPAP Machines and Albergues

Thank you for your opinion. I’m merely expressing my own, suggesting that if I were a high-decibel snorer, I would feel it was more considerate for me to get a private room, than expect everyone else to be happily accommodate my nighttime symphony./ I wonder if your casual observations of...

    CPAP Machines and Albergues

YES, PLEASE...bring your CPAP! I shared rooms with those who did and it was heaven compared to those who think that in this day and age there is any excuse for snoring, the likes of which could crack walls! At the very least it would be great if they would book a private room. So thank you...

New foot injury -requesting advice - do I cancel my Camino?

Whatever injury you take into a Camino will be magnified 10-fold. Doctors are not great at this stuff--they will typically tell you to rest it. If you can, see a good Sports Medicine Physiotherapist. They are much better diagnostically, and can give you exercises and taping techniques. I...

Is KT Tape available on the Camino Frances?

They do, but i never did find the pre-measured, perforated, easy-tear like we can buy in Canada. Not a big deal, but it does require purchasing scissors to cut it. Found some perforated in Leon at a physio place but he said he could not sell me that, just the one that needs cutting.
