I walked it in 2018 and used the by then out-of-date CSJ guide. There were definitely stretches where lack of water was a problem, such as the Jaca-monastery route (although there is a village half-way. There is another section (and I have forgotten which) of about 20km where there was...
The CSJ guide was out-of-date when I used it, admittedly in 2018. Caused some inconvenience at the time. Maybe it's age has resulted in it being discontinued.
I walked it from Oloron, and it is a great, if somewhat energetic camino. The walk up to the Monastery is brutal, take plenty of water if you if you do this, otherwise maybe utilise the bus. Fortunately the albergue in St Cilia is wonderful and is run by a lovely woman.
Hi, I walked this camino in 2018 and thought it wonderful.
On Gronze for example they advise against walking the variant from Jaca to San Juan de Peña solo. If this variant is not taken, I'm guessing it must be possible to take a break day and visit the monastery from Santa Cilia?
I walked from...
When I walked up the mountain I used the road for the first half, more through accident than design. There is a village at about half-way up where water was available. Thereafter I used the track to the top and it was a very trying experience in the Spanish sun. I was absolutely creased by the...
I also enjoyed the whole route, once I got home and reflected upon it. I walked in June and it was a little warm, and quite empty. If I do it again I would do so in Spring.
By the way, who is this Giono chap, and why does he think everyone can understand his native Sanskrit?
Agree with Ronan on this one. There are some detours on the Aragones that are definitely 'off piste'. For example, the route up to the monastery is quite rough. I always wear boots and have never used trail runners so can't (and wouldn't anyway) give advice, but it is something to bear in...
I was so creased and it was so late when I got to the monastery that I didn't go in. I admired it from without and then went downhill using the road (there was no way I was going to descend using the path, having slogged my way up the mountain on its rugged terrain - I could imagine a misstep...
Was this the first albergue on the left as you walked into town?
Funny thing about this camino is that having said I would never return, I now would like to walk it again, maybe with a better guide book and not in summer, when the sometimes longish gaps between water resupply can be...
I walked last July. Not too much in the way of road walking; just a few sections, basically near towns. Take plenty of water with you, as this can be a solitary route, and places to refill during the day can sometimes be sparse.
Hi Nadine,
I endorse the Rev's comment about an Oloron start: the 3-day journey up into the Pyrenees becomes increasingly spectacular until you reach the summit. On the second day there are some short sections where the path is cut out of a cliff above the river gorge. Please use the rope...
It will still be warm in September, so take plenty of water. In some places you will be limited in the choice of available accommodation - there are some very small villages, in addition to larger towns like Jaca. Use guides like Gronze to get up-to-date information. The one place I can...
