I left Le Puy at the end of August 2008. It was really hot to begin with, but became chilly (but not awful) by the end of September. I only had one day of serious rain (near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port), though there were brief rain showers at other times.

There's also (or at least there was in 2008) a pate manufacturer that had a shelter with a picnic table for pilgrims and a bunch of pate left out with a price list. They trusted us to take what we wanted and leave money. I can't for the life of me remember where it was, but I think somewhere...
I walked 2.5 years ago without a phone. I just took advantage of other people's cell phones :) (they were usually happy to book me in too when they were calling for themselves) or used phone booths with a calling card (the same card was good for calling home to Canada), or sometimes gite owners...
I found that, too, except I met three Americans and at least one British woman--and the Canadians (apart from myself and one other) were French Canadians. There were very few English-as-a-first-language speakers, which could get exhausting and a little lonely since my French is good enough to...
I'm Canadian, and I ordered the Le Puy Miam Miam Dodo from the CSJ bookshop. They have the Arles one too. I don't know if there are any better options.

Hi Dick,
I didn't take the Cele variant either, but I do remember that the Miam-Miam Dodo guidebook had the same details for it that it did for the main route (accommodation, stores, basic maps, etc). If the guidebook you have isn't a recent update, you'll probably want the Miam-Miam Dodo...
When I was walking, no one seemed to get up before 7, so you might not have others to follow in the dark. But it might be different in June/July--I was walking in September with the retirees.
The route is generally quite well way marked. There can be long stretches without way marks when you're...
Hi Kay,
I can't comment on walking in June/July. I started walking at the end of August and it was quite hot, but survivable. According to the Confraternity of Saint James, "the central part of the route is extremely hot in summer," and April to June and September/October are recommended, but...
Hi daydreamer,
I did the trip alone (though I did walk with people I met intermittently), as a 28-year-old woman. I never once felt even the tiniest bit worried about my safety on the Le Puy route--except maybe a bit while walking on some of the highways. :)
A cell phone would be handy. I...
Hi daydreamer,
How far you can walk overall really depends on how far you want to walk in a day. I did the route from Le Puy in 2.5 months--but a lot of people did it much faster. I was 28, but not in great shape (to begin with), and had a lot of time, so I didn't push it.
A lot of French...
I've been walking the last 2.5 weeks from Le Puy (I'm in Cahors now). I haven't had any problems, but I usually book the night before. (I usually struggle through in my very limited French, but gite owners or French-speaking pilgrims have also been happy to call for me.) I've met a few people...
Hi all,
I'm a Canadian and new to the forum, and just have a quick question.
I'm planning to walk from Le Puy to Santiago this summer/fall. I was hoping to mid to late August, but I know France in August can be kind of crazy. If anyone's done this route around that time, would you recommend...
