Albergues fill up as school year ends

Correo Gallego reports on the increasing numbers en route on the Camino Frances as young people flock to it in preference to the traditional summer holidays. The albergue in Arca/O Pino has place for 130 people, but 187 are crammed in. The one in Arzua opens its doors at 13.00 and within 20 minutes all places are taken; those who arrive later have to make do with makeshift beds on the floor, or are sent off to the local sports hall.

Whereas in the spring, the majority of pilgrims are non-Spaniards, in the summer the majority are young Spaniards, mainly starting their journey in Galicia rather than further back.

Later update: Voz de Galicia also covers this story, describing the 'avalanche' of pilgrims in the runup to St James Day.
