Australian Camino Salvado 2012

New Member
The Camino Salvado, a pilgrimage in the tradition
of the Camino de Santiago, is on again this spring.
We follow the path of the pioneering Benedictine
monk, Rosendo Salvado, who came to the Swan River
Colony in the 1840's. He was a refugee from Santiago
where anti-clerical forces had closed the Camino and
banished the monks and nuns. Dom Salvado embraced
his new life and established the Benedictine town of
New Norcia, which continues as a working monastery
to this day.

The seven day journey takes you from Subiaco, on
the hill above the city of Perth, to unique New Norcia,
on the Victoria Plains. The route follows the Swan
River from the coastal plain up the Swan Valley to
the hills, then goes over the watershed into the
Northern Valleys. We follow the Brockman River
between the ridges, then cross the western watershed
through forest and fields to the Victoria Plains.
Finally, we cross the Moore River (from the Nyoongar,
Dark River) and walk into New Norcia.

We will be travelling during the West Australian
wildflower season, and the path we follow is through
the home of the everlastings. In early spring, the
creeks are running, the waterholes are full and the
landscape is at its greenest. The weather is ideal for
walking - max 20-25 and min 8-13.

Dates for 2012 are Sun 19th - Sun 26th Aug and
Sun 2nd Sep - Sun 9th Sep. Each pilgrimage has a
max of 24 walkers and the cost is $850 for all
accommodation, transport and generous meals and
snacks. Luggage is sent direct to accommodation and
walkers carry only a daypack and water.

This was a wonderful pilgrimage walk in 2011. It was a quite different experience to walk in the Western Australian spring, and Kay and the team did a wonderful job organizing everything. If you are looking for an uniquely Australian pilgrimage in the Camino tradition this is well worth getting to Perth to do.

I was on the same Camino Salvado as DougFitz, and am on the organisation committee for 2012. I unreservedly recommend the experience. Yes the wildflowers are stunning, but it's no walk in the park!

Well spotted, Alan.
Sorry about that.
I've corrected the dates for 2012.
