Barcelona to SJPP Frid 25 Sep 09 what is the best way

Hi All,

About 3pm we arrive in Barcelona and hope to get from Barcelona to Pamplona possibly by train then try and get a bus to Roncesvalle then a taxi to SJPP.

My wife and I are not sure how long this journey will take has anyone made this journey before. We cant book accommo in SJPP until we know when we are likely to arrive.

Hello train time options shown on the Renfe website today are:
Leave Barcelona 7:35 am Arrive Pamplona 11:17
or leave 9:20 am Arrive 13:08
or leave 16:45 pm Arrive 20:32

I believe the bus leaves Pamplona at 6:00 pm weekdays, then a taxi from Roncesvalle. Or you can pre-book a direct shuttle bus from Pamplona to SJPP by contacting Caroline at Express Burricot: apcaroline@hotmail.com. The shuttle bus takes about 1.5 hours from pamplona to SJPP.

The last train from Barcelona Sants station to Pamplona on the 25th Sept leaves at 16.45.
If you arrive at the airport around 3 o'clock you'd have an hour and three quarters to collect your luggage,clear customs, walk across the long elevated bridge to the local station and then wait for the train to take you to Sants station. That train journey takes about 25 minutes, as I remember.

I'm not sure if you could do it in that time. Even if you did, you would arrive in Pamplona at 20;32 and the bus to Roncesvalles leaves at 18:00.
If you spent the night in Barcelona you could take either of two trains the following day which would leave you in Pamplona with plenty of time to get the bus to Roncesvalles.
The first of these leaves Barcelona at 7:35 and arrives in Pamplona at 11:17. The second departs at 9:20 and arrives at 13:08.

Many pilgrims get to SJPP by train from Bayonne, France.
A lot of these fly into Bayonne/Biarritz from the British Isles.

Perhaps look up train travel from Barcelona, crossing the border at Hendaye/Irun and ending up in Bayonne where you take one of about 4 trains per day to SJPP.

If you stick with your plan through Pamplona - Roncesvalles - SJPP, I recommend looking for other pilgrims at the train station, and bus station in Pamplona and organizing a taxi to take you to SJPP.

Legend has it that everything smoothes out when you leave the 21st century and enter the Camino.
