Hi I am walking in July and may be camping a considerable amount of the way. Is it a good idea to bring a mosquito net for camping and also a bed bug sheet for sleeping in albergues

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Laurancetsang,

Both items would be useful in summer! I carry a bug sheet made by Life Systems which retails for about $15. Here is a descriptive link http://www.lifesystems.co.uk/psec/mosqu ... rsheet.htm They also produce a mosquito net.

Hope you have a bite-free trip!

Buen Camino!

Margaret, does the bug sheet have a strong scent?

Annie,

Very little.

Hope your journey is bug-less and going well!

From the description: ... Using an ultra-fine mesh and a special Anti-Bed Bug impregnation formula, ...

In other words, they are impregnated with poison which keeps the bugs off.

I'm not really sure how much a 'bug sheet' costs. However, as an alternative, simply buy a regular sheet, and spray with permithrin.

Permithrin bad, not sold in Canada.
Thought the sheet had some magic but probably sprayed with permithrin.

Others also carry a this sheet or mentioned it on the Forum.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Permithrin bad, not sold in Canada.
It is sold in Canada for direct application to livestock, but not sold for human use. The literature pretty much agrees that, when dry, permethrin is safe for humans. Canada has not agreed, apparently, but is widely available for controlling insects on horses and cattle. If you live in Canada and want some, go to a farm supply store.

But, there's always a but, the livestock product is mixed with other very humanly dangerous chemicals. Only in Canada you say, we must be a very sensitive breed.

There has been extensive discussion on this at http://www.caminodesantiago.me/board/equipment-questions/topic13282.html. Pymethrin absorption through the skin is minimial, but one should avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth and vagina, dry or not. So one shouldn't be using it on clothing or equipment that might come into contact with these parts of the body.

LIfe Systems do not appear to disclose what they use to treat their bed sheet, referring to a 'special Anti-Bed Bug impregnation formula'. They clearly state that they use pymethrin on their mosquito nets, so one might infer from this that the bed sheet has been treated with something else.

I will be walking the Camino Frances in September 2013 and have concerns about bed bugs. When you use the Lifesystems Bed Bug Sheet, do you put it atop the mattress and then use a sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner on top of the bed bug sheet? That would certainly keep any chemicals off of your skin. Thanks............Susan
