Bedbugs Update 2011-2012?

Hi all, love the forums. I've gotten much useful info for my own Camino del Norte. I depart for it July 6!

Does anyone have any updates or info to share about bedbugs in albergues along the 'Nortes? How common are they? Any albergues in particular to avoid?

I'm looking forward to the journey, and I want to be savvy and bug-free while I'm walking and when I return home.

Do not know anything about the camino norte, however i just finished the camino frances a few weeks ago. While there were a few isolated stories of people being bitten, I did not suffer from it.

Not sure whether I did not come in contact with any or whether it was due to the product I used on my gear as follows:

It is called Bug Proof Ultra Clothing - Treatment - with Permethrin and I bought is from http://www.purpleturtle.co.uk They are based in the uk and shipped it to me in Ireland in a couple of days. I sprayed the outside of my sleeping bag and the outside of my rucksack with it and then was as careful as possible not to put anything other than the sleeping bag on the bed and kept everything else inside my rucksack.

As I say maybe I simply did not come in contact with any bugs but I did not have any problems.

Enjoy your trip.

There is no guarantee that, if you are told that the route is clear right now, it may not be so by July 6. And information may not be related to all albergues on the way.
You can avoid being infested/pestered by bedbugs by inspecting your mattress and its surroundings before settling down. Do use this Forum's search facility for "bedbugs" and read up what you can and should do. And perhaps ask the question again next month :?:
You sure will enjoy your walk with a caution.
Ultreya!

I am on the Norte at the moment, I have not seen any or heard any stories about them. I always check the mattresses, the nearby walls and bed framework, however there is a lot of people on the route that came through France, this and the most people seem to chuck their backpacks on to the beds could change the situation.

Spoke too soon, a French Peregrina had bites come up today that she reckons came from Buen Pastor in Laredo, two days earlier.

Buen camino Mike, nice to hear from you!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I am on the Frances right now: Belorado and have not encountered any bugs or anyone else who has.
