Bunk bed?....

Hello to all

In a few days I start my adventure along the French Camino and have been wondering about bunk beds! I'm a 6ft 4 tall guy and do carry a few extra pounds and worry that bunk bed might not be well suited for me? can anyone help ease my mind of this subject?

I'm 6' 4" as well but never had a problem with the length of the bunks. I am 92 kilos. If you are concerned you can always request the lower bunk.

You might not fit many of the standard bunks lengthwise! They are about 6 feet long. Several people have had bunks topple onto them while climbing to the top bunk. Be sure that the bunk is well anchored before climbing the side. Most beds are first come, first serve. If you want a lower bunk, stop early. Hostales and pensiones are almost all beds rather than bunks. Pay a little extra, and bunks won't be a problem. Buen camino.

It's not the bed you have to worry about, its the bugger snoring underneath you. Besides, once the hospitalero has left for the night you can always drag your mattress somewhere else if its a real problem. I'm 6'2" and only have a problem in older pensions where the owners still have beds built for the 4' Moors, especially with footstands, at least your feet can hang off the end if the bed is open.

Try to keep safety in mind. Albergues are coming into compliance with health and safety codes and zoning, and a mattress blocking an exit could be very dangerous to your fellow pilgrims. That is one reason that random floor sleeping is disappearing on the camino. Some rules have a sound reason.

Hi all,

These answer have been great but haven't touch on the fact i'm no skinny guy! I know i've got a bit of timber and saw a video on the tube bout some poorly made bunk on the camino that looked a bit weak for the larger lad.

No worries Darren, you will alwasy find a bed that will work... Just ask whe you get there and they will do all they can to accomodate. I saw some people in full refuges ask someone with a lower bunk to trade for the higher for x reason (age, bad knees, etc...), and everyone was very acoomodating!

Laguhed and laughed this spring in an albergue when a tall and heavy pilgrim tried to get to his,upper bunk and the older retired,German professor in the lower bunk was a bit concerned. The banter between thes two was histerical, with the professor saying he was willimg to die on the Camino but not killed by a bunk bed. The group in the room rearanged things so the heavier younger pilgrim could get a lower bunk. It was a scene out of a highschool sleepover. It had been a long time since I had laughed like that.
