Camino from Bayonne to Irun?

Dear fellow pilgrims,

I'm going to do the Camino del Norte in about a week. I arrive at Bayonne. I was wondering if I could start my camino from there. My initial plan was taking the train from Bayonne to Hendaye but I was wondering if it could be possible to walk this route in some way.

As far as I know, there is no direct route going from Bayonne to Hendaye. But I could potentially walk the Camino Baztan until Souraide and then join a way from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Hendaye. The problem is that I do not find much information about the SJPDP>Hendaye route.

Is there a way to walk from Bayonne to Hedaye?
Is there more information on the SJPDP>Hendaye route? I've heard about the GR10 but that is not what I'm looking for. There should be an easier way...

Then you may not like doing a stretch of the GR11 either but read on.

I've been looking into taking the GR11 from Elizondo (on the Camino Baztan and with albergue and other lodging) to Bera (lodging again) and then to Irun on the Camino Norte.

That's the Camino of the French coast or littoral. I've cycled it, it's a pretty route. The Confraternity of St James has a guide, and so does the local pilgrim association. Not much pilgrim type accommodation, though.

Thank you! To be more precise about not trying to do the GR10: I said it because the website of the 'Flemish Compostela Society/Company' talks about it on their website (it contains a map). Translated by deepl:

There are two ways to cover the distance from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Hendaye. For pilgrims with a strong condition, there is the high route through the mountains. But there is also an easier version through hills and valleys. The high trail follows the GR10 trail through the western Pyrenees. This trail is really heavy. Moreover, the weather has to be taken into account. There's little shelter against rain and wind and during thunderstorms it can be really dangerous. Then there is the low route, a road at the foot of the Pyrenees, which runs more through inhabited areas.

In both cases the route is about 75 km long. For the GR the pilgrim has to use the white-red markings. The low trail is signposted with the familiar blue shell and yellow arrows. The most appropriate stops are: Bidarray, Itxassou - Pas de Roland, Espelette, Urrugne and Hendaye. From Hendaye it is 2.5 km to reach Irun. There are both a pilgrimage and a youth hostel. In the other stops there are gîtes, campsites and exceptionally also a pilgrim's hostel.

Hi, I’ve walked from Bayonne to Irun. I stayed at Hotel Les Genets in Anglet, then walked about 23kms next day to Ciboure (stayed at the Ibis Hotel), then about 18kms next day to Albergue Capitan Tximista, avoiding the centre of Irun. There is a regular ferry from Hendaye to Hondarribia. See attached pdfs. I started on the coast near Bordeaux. I wrote about it here:

Yes, it is way-marked, but you need to stay focused, as it’s not always obvious which way to go. Just keep the sea on your right! I had the printed maps with me as well, and MapsMe is useful to have on your cellphone. (Once the area map is downloaded you can use it offline.)

From Bayonne to Irun there is marked way called Via de Bayona (continuing from Irun to Burgos). I walked it in 2016. You can PM me your e-mail and I can send you the material I got at the time.

I’ve only walked the last part from Urrugne to Hendaye and it was pleasant and somewhat suburban, little satellite villages and a feeling of gentility (compared with further inland).

I walked with the Baztan Five from Irun up to Biarritz, then we caught a bus to Bayonne. Big fun, beautiful trail, but I wouldn't want to try it in bad weather!
