It all started with a travel show on TV...and now I am planning a walk along the camino.

Currently, I am walking on the treadmill 10k and strengthing my back with exercises.

If anyone has a current favorite guide book please share the name of it with the board.

If one wanted to start in Leon, would Madrid be a good place to fly into or Paris from the States?

The one I've got is Walking the Camino de Santiago - it's not the most in-depth work out there but has a good range of information presented in an accessible style.

I'm flying to Madrid from the States

From Minnesota, I've decided to fly into and out of Madrid. I think the airport is easily accessable to the rail system and the bus depot. Hope this helps you out.
I've read "Pilgrimage to the end of the World" by conrad Rudolph. "The Camino A Journey of the Spirit" by Shirley MacLaine. "El Camino Walking to Santiago de Compostela" by Lee Hoinacki. All were informative.

Guidebooks

I've purchased many books since deciding to walk the Camino.

My favorites are the 3 by John Brierley,

A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camnino Fisterra
A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino de Santiago
A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino Portugues

They are small, lightweight, full of GREAT information and photos, with mileages between villages and descriptions of the various refuges. They're really worth the investment. I'm using them to plan our trip in September.

Practical Guide For Pilgrims

Hi!

I'm walking the camino Frances i july and I bought the "Practical Guide For Pilgrims" by Millan Bravo Lozano which was endorced by the danish association for Santiago Pilgrims and I am so far very impressed. Together with the book you get small maps over the daily routes - then you wont have to take the book with you (you save some 150 g.... :wink: )

I've just read Tim Moore's 'Spanish Steps'. It's not a guide book but it really captures what the camino is like.

If you are flying into Madrid from the States you may be able to add the connecting flight to Leon a little extra cost if you are flying in on Iberia or one of it's partners.

My favourite book to take with me is the CSJ "The Camino Frances 2006"

it is not a guide but has the information and practical advice necessary for the journey. Both the guides by John Brierley and Millan Bravo Lozano are worth reading before you go and the maps with the Lozano one are useful.

I did the Camino last year. John Brierly is the best for Americans, is my vote. Walking on a treadmill is ok but walking outside is better, much better. After you can walk for 3 hours, then carry a back pack, when you walk. Try eating different foods while walking more tthan 3 hours. You need energy and salt and water. lots of water.

Try Team in Training they will teach you to walk marathons.

Starting in Leon

i am from denmark and will be starting in Leon. The best route I could find to get to Leon was to fly in to Santiago and then rent a car to drive to Leon. The reason for that was that trains and busses only leave for Leon once a day, and I have only 15 days and didn´t want to waste a day waiting, and the price is not so different.
If anyone wants to join me on the 17th Juli around noon in my car from santiago to leon you are welcome.
