Does anyone know where it is and we it begins? I have heard they have a special service for pilgrims and list all the people doing the pilgrimmage. Or is this Ronv?

Thanks - six days!! :D

marclynnette,

The famous evening mass and blessing for pilgrims is held every night throughout the year in the collegeate church at the monastery of Roncevalles. This is an almost mythic place and always a very beautiful and poignant service. During one winter camino in January 2009 the monk who stamped my Credential personally invited me to this evening service since I was their only pilgrim. It was lovely and held with in the ancient Romanesque church (happily heated for winter) in front of the magnificent silver sculpture of the Virgin. Three monks assisted and asked me to stand alone at the altar with them. ...In retrospect how special it was to be the single pilgrim where crowds have stood throughout time.

Buen Camino,

I attended the church service in Roncesvalles and the church was full (early September). It was all in Spanish, of course, and I'm not Catholic but it was perfectly lovely!! I was very moved and truly felt included as all the pilgrims were invited to the front of the church for a special blessing. Many locals were in attendance too and they added their Buen Caminos to the mix. I guess it was particularly poignant since it was on 9/11. According to my journal, the mass was at 1900 but I'm sure it will be posted clearly at the albergue. Enjoy and Many Blessings!

I attended Mass at the Cathedral in SJPP; this was a morning service - and in Basque language. There were several services that morning, as I recall. There were surely quite a few folks in walking attire (complete with packs, which one leaves along the back wall near the entry). The cathedral is in the old town area, between the Pilgrim Office and the pilgrim bridge leading out of town (that total distance is about 3 blocks). The Pilgrim Office would have details.
