Ultreia
My wife and I started our pilgrimage last year in Le Puy en Velay, walking with a donkey from Les Anes des Monedies. In 13 days, we got as far as Conques. This year we'll be continuing from Conques, starting sometime around June 9th. We haven't decided which day yet, we're flying to France on June 4th, arriving on the 5th and spending a few days with my wife's mother, who lives in Grenoble. Then we'll take a train to Le Puy and either catch a ride from la Malle Postale or Transports Lample from le Puy to Conques, and start walking the next day.
Last year we had a donkey carrying our stuff, which has its pros and cons. I think I'll write up a separate post to talk about them, rather than make this a lot longer. In short, we were really glad we tried it, but by the end of the trip, we had both decided that this year we'd go with backpacks.
We'll be taking the Rocamadour variant once we get to Figeac, coming back down GR46 to Vers, just before Cahors. I've been to Rocamadour once before, and am looking forward to visiting it again, arriving on foot as a pilgrim, rather than by car as a tourist. In the middle ages, it was the most visited pilgrimage destination in France. It's a very special place, and I highly recommend it.
I'd like to make it as far as Moissac this year, but I'm afraid our time will be limited to only about 10 days walking, so we'll probably only make it to Cahors. Cahors and Moissac both have good train connections, so we can make it back to Grenoble in less than a day from either one.
