Crowds in August

I'm worried about crowds on the Northern Route in late August. Should I be?

Crowds in August
Rains in February
Snows in December
Harvest in June ...

David, in August and at the peak of the holiday season all of the resorts along the Norte will be thronged with holiday makers and accommodation, other than Albergues, will be at a premium. Towns, restaurants and bars will be busy but the walking in between will not be crowded, though you will encounter surfers and sun- worshippers in even the most remote of coves. Whether you should be worried depends on your concerns. If you want tranquility and solitude don't go in August.

I am not looking for big crowds, a bit of tranquility would be nice, but I dont need to be alone for a month either. My other concideration is that I would like to go a bit low budget, and therefore will spend some nice nights on the beach or somewhere sheltered, in case an albuerge is closed or full (dont want to pay hostal prices). So based on your advice I am leaning towards starting early September, where the big crowds should be gone and the weather should still be good. What do you think?

Anyone have experience this time of year with the weather and the 'crowds'? And will most albergues on the Norte be open in September?

Thx, Martin

PS this will be my 5th Camino, after 4x Frances it is high time for an other adventure

Martin, there's a fabulous little bivouac cave about a mile out of Llanes on the coastal path to Poo, spent a night there myself some many moons ago. Keep looking back over your right shoulder and you should spot it. It's a good 50 metres above the sea so dry except in big storms. Other than that I can't really help on free accommodation, though the hay harvest will be in so there are always prospects. The weather can be lovely along the Norte in September but watch out for those big autumnal lows drifting in from the Atlantic, they can dump a heck of a lot of water in a very short space of time.

My group of six arrives in Irun on May 20 and we're starting our Camino on May 21. Since it's the beginning of the busy season, I'm wondering if we should order trekking poles from Amazon Espana...
