Easy days in Madrid

For 2 female friends, landing in Madrid with 2 days to spare before taking a train to Pontevedra. Can anyone suggest an economical hotel with good access to Chamartín train station and also a joining point for a Hop- On- Hop -off bus. They are hoping to see as much as possible in a short time, whilst hopefully getting over jet lag. Thanks!

I always use Hostal Mayor on Sol or Hostal Gonzalo on c. Cervantes. Neither the absolute cheapest; but clean and well located. Both are ‘room only’ but surrounded with cafeterias. You really don’t need to stay near Chamartin given the easy metro / Cercanias connections. It’s out of the centre.

We take the same perspective as Henry since Charmartin isn’t at all central and easily accessed by metro. Our favorite small hotel with quite nice rooms in a great neighborhood with an excellent price for the city is the Hostal Santa Cruz (you can find it on Booking.com). It’s just a short walk to the Sol metro stop and Plaza Mayor. So many attractions are walkable from this location plus a number of attractive neighborhoods just to stroll around. Enjoy your time in Madrid.

I get over my jet lag by staying at OK Hostel Madrid my first one or two nights in Spain. It is in the La Latina section, not too far from Plaza Mayor and a couple of km west of the Atocha station. It has both dorm rooms and private rooms. Super clean and great vibes. Food and bar service in house and many great restaurants and cafes very nearby. Available on Booking.com. I am old and always tired after flying all night from the US. I just take the 30 euro cab from the airport. Buen Camino
 
Don’t forget you can pick up your camino passport at the church near the plaza mayor. Check website for the hours. For €1 you can buy a plastic sleeve protector. BC
 
I stayed at Hostal Met Madrid. Right by the San Miguel market and on the same street as the Camino church in Madrid.

Also have stayed in Hostal Gonzalo and currently staying in Hostal Cervantes in the same building. We’ve just had a few days in Madrid before heading back home from the Camino. Both are good places to stay. Lots more to see if you stay around Atocha Station which you can get to fairly easily from Chamartin.

Hostel Gonzalo is my favorite. I’ve stayed there 4 times and usually before and after my Camino and the price is good and I think convenient to everything.
