First Camino - How much to budget if staying in refugios?

Hi All,

It looks like I will be starting at SJPP mid July and will be walking for 3 weeks (plan to go with the flow and see where I end up). I have been researching what to take, etc. but would appreciate some up-to-date information on how much cash to bring. I will also have a bank card and credit card (in case of emergency) with me but how much should I budget?

FYI I plan on going "simple": staying at refugios, eating simple (buying food at markets/stores along the way). I need my daily cafe con leche or cortado but do not otherwise plan on stopping to eat. Do plan on visiting a museo here and there...

Could someone give me an example of an "average" daily budget?

Thanks for help.

Cheers,
LTfit (unexperienced pelegrina)

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Cash in Euros will be 30-35 per day. Cash dollars won't do you much good; they are hard to exchange. Travelers cheques are virtually useless. There are regular ATMs along the way, if your bank is on their network, so you can replenish your wallet. Credit cards are useful only in "fancy" places, and are not accepted at albergues.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I´m on my 9th day of the Camino and averaging around 30Euros a day - say 10 for albergue, 10 for menu del peregrino, and 10 for entry fees, food, snacks, internet etc.

Buen camino

Great, thanks for info and so up-to-date (wow amtrakker, you're now walking!!!)
Estimated 30-35 euros so glad to hear that I was not off.

A question for you amtrakker: what kind of shoes/boots are you wearing?

Not leaving until July but already getting excited!

Cheers,
LTfit

I spent 90 days in Spain and my budget was 1000 US Dollars per month. The exchange was around $1.39 to 1 Euro, so I was able to live quite comfortably on 700 Euros per month.

This included my food, lodging, and travel and I took quite a few buses, trains, and flights.

I was there for 3 months and spent $3000.

I'd say if you are frugal you should have more than enough money if you take $1000 for one month.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.
