Fishing

I work in Fisheries in the US, and I'd love to catch a native brown trout while in Europe. Will it be easy to get a fishing license in Spain and find a wild trout steam on the Camino in July? We're leaving from SJPdP.

Thanks,

Paul

Spanish fishing licenses are not valid for the whole of Spain. Each region has it's own fishing license and if you wish to fish in more than one region you will need a valid fishing license for each region. Fishing in rivers, estuaries or lakes also requires an angling license, which can be obtained from many fishing shops, some Caja Rural and Caja Mar Banks, or from the local office of the Ministry of the Environment (Minsterio de Medio Ambiente). Trout fishing usually requires an additional daily permit (licencia de pesca rio con recargo trucha), which essentially buys temporary membership to a local fishing club. Welcome to the country which perfected the Inquisition.

I'm not sure what type of trout are in it, but there is a beautiful Hemmingway-type trout stream downstream of Roncevalles. There were many signs about it being a special protected zone, but perhaps there is some catch and release. The regulations didn't seem to bother a group of gypsies, who had set up a long term camp and were netting the fish out.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Thanks for the great information. We're are going to have a rental car on our first day and will be between San Sebastian and Bayonne. Maybe I can find a place to purchase a license while there.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Don't forget the sheep head in the trees overhanging the river.
Go and walk your camino , come back, put the fly amongst the dropping/ drifting maggots and enjoy your catch.
Like the Camino Paul you will need patience.
Have a wonderful holiday mate,
Buen Camino,
David
