From Holland to Vézelay

Dear all,

Within a few weeks (starting the 6th or 5th of August) I intend to begin with my first Camino, starting in Vézelay. I really, really look forward to it, but I'm also getting a little nervous since I'm not yet sure how to get to Vézelay, and how to get back in time (I have aprox. 2 weeks time for travel and walking). So how do you travel to your destination? What is the best way to get to Vézelay? I live in Groningen, Holland. I am considering hitch-hiking, but since I've that only done that once and I'm not really a fluent speaker of french (I am practising!) I'm a little scared to do so. Also, getting to the smaller towns such as Vézelay can be difficult (or so I've read). Since I'm a student I don't have a lot of money so the cheaper, the better ;) Any help is much appreciated! :)

Best,
Nephtis

Nephtis,

I can not answer about hitch hiking but Vezelay has no train station. However there are several trains or autocars a day from Paris at the Gare Paris Bercy to Sermizelles which is 10 km away. The price is 30.80 Euros if you are over 25. For more information about these see >> http://www.voyages-sncf.com/. From the Sermizelles station you can walk to Givry and Asquins to finally arrive at Vezelay.

For more information about Vezelay in general see >> http://www.vezelaytourisme.com/.

As you are aware Vezelay is a VERY special place.

Bon Chemin and Buen Camino,

Intending to take a taxi, we arrived at the Sermizelles station, which had no taxis! Fortunately, a French pilgrim had arranged for one days earlier, and she shared the ride to Vezelay with us. If you don't want to walk, arrange in advance for a taxi! You may need some French skills to do that.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
mspath, thank you for your reply! Very good to know, I'll keep it in mind. I guess I'll just (somehow) get to Paris, and from there move to Vézelay :)

Falcon, thank you as well. I'll be sure to search for some phonenumbers that I might need. Although I don't think I'll be able to have a real conversation, my french skills should suffice to order a cab :)
