Good, cheapish hotel in Santiago

Hi - my husband is coming out to meet me at the end of my journey in October, all being well and we'll be spending a weekend in Santiago. Can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel in a central area.

Many thanks

For my previous two Caminos I've stayed at Casa Felisa on Porta da Pena, 5. Their own website doesn't seem to be working today for some reason, but they're bookable through http://www.hostelworld.com . It's 5 minutes walk away from the cathedral, has friendly staff and an excellent restaurant.

There are also several pensions in the same area, which might be cheaper than a hotel.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Kay,
What's your idea of reasonable? And what's your idea of "good"? I say that only because we can give you a better idea if you throw out a price and what you're looking for.

If you want a pension, which means basic, clean accommodation, no phone, no frills, Casa Felisa is as good as any (I have found that booking through hostelworld.com frequently gives you a cheaper rate than booking directly with the hostal itself). There are many of these, and you won't have any trouble finding them when you arrive in Oct. , so you could scout them out for location and how they look. Others I have stayed in include Linares and Hostal Girasol (on same street as Casa Felisa),

If you want a hotel, the cheapish side is probably around 70-90 euros a night. Some good choices in that range are As Artes, Costa Vella, Entrecercas. You can find them all easily on the internet and they are all close to the cathedral in the historic center.

And I second Whalleyranger's comments on the restaurant in Casa Felisa. I think it's a bit more "upscale" than the lodging side of the business. The restaurant is in a lovely outdoor terrace, and the food is very good. Especially good for a light meal, I've found -- their salads are such a welcome change from the ensalada mixta that you will be well familiar with by the end of your Camino!

Buen camino, Laurie

Sometimes the best deals are had if you book a hotel less than three days from the start of your stay when many hotels start drastically dropping rates to fill otherwise empty rooms. October is the off season when room deals can be readily had by booking at last minute.

The area around Rua da Porta da Pena has many very acceptable accommodation options, which can be as inexpensive as 30 Euros a night. You will not find their address on internet but fluent, on the spot, asking and negotiation usually has (economic) wonders.

I have stayed 4 times at La Salle, at Tras.de Sta. Clara, for $25/euros. No luxury but your own room, with bathroom, do it yourself laundry for 4 euros. About 10 mins walk from Cathedral and 15 mins from bus station. Friendly reception

I loved the Casa do Peregrino - very clean, nice friendly helpfull people on reception and only a couple of minutes from the cathederal. I was there in April and did not have a booking but got a double room for myself and daughter for 40 euros a night.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
At the end of many Caminos I have happily stayed at the Libredon Barbantes on the Paza de Fonseca literally around the corner from the Cathedral. It is so close that I could see the towers from the ceiling window as well as hear the great bells chime. I love it and feel like Quasimodo at Notre Dame! Their multilingual web site is here >>http://www.libredonbarbantes.es. They do not offer breakfast, but the famous Cafe Casino is nearby.

And if you wish to wait until you arrive as many do simply go to the Tourist Office for Santiago down the street from the Pilgrims´Office at number 62 wherethey have a reservations service. They will tell you what rooms are available, where in your price bracket.
