Does anyone have any ideas about cheap accommodation in either Hendaye or Irun. I will arrive late evening and want to leave Hendaye on a train at 07.00. I assume there are plenty of guest houses that haven't got around to advertising on-line, am I wrong?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Sue,

in Hendaye directly across the street from the SNCF station is a simple bar with an amiable barman. I believe they have basic rooms over the bar.

Also nearby are two small hotels which are pleasant. Over the years at the end of past Caminos I have stayed in both. Closest is Hôtel de la Gare,1 Rue Déportes, tel. 05 59 20 81 90. Another is Hôtel Santiago, 29 Rue de Santiago, tel 05 59 20 00 94.

Bon Voyage and Buen Camino,

Margaret

Thank you Margaret, that is most useful.

I will be arriving in Irun by bus either on September 17 or 18 from Bilbao. On the following day I hope to begin my Camino (combination of Norte and Primitivo, ending in Santiago). A few questions:

1- I plan to travel with the ALSA bus line. Does anyone know if I can catch the bus at the Bilbao airport? Where does the bus drop us off in Irun?

2- Are there economic, clean, accommodations near the bus station and/or the beginning of the Camino? I'd prefer a quiet, private room on the night before I embark on the Camino!

3- Are albergues/refugios the only accommodation facilities that can "stamp" the credential (I already have a credential), or can other accommodations (such as mentioned in #2) also stamp the passport?

4- If albergues/refugios are the only ones issuing stamps, can I get a stamp even though I didn't stay there?

Thank you!
Edgar.

Edgar,

If i remember correctly the bus station in Irun is at the RENFE rr station.

For more information on places to stay in Irun see this Forum thread >> el-camino-del-norte/topic14083.html#p97772

Check the Forum headings Camino Norte and Camino Primitivo for more relevant info regarding your journey.

Any place along the way can stamp your Credential. Bars, restaurants, albergues, etc. are used to this. Just ask!

Buen Camino,

Margaret

The bus station in Irun is indeed right next to the RENFE train station. I arrived there at about 7am after the all night bus from Santiago last May and just walked to the railway station from there... But I think the bus also did a 'drop off' in the town of Irun before that.... I was a bit sleepy at the time but I think I am right...

I tried the bars across the street but they didn't acknowledge any accomodation, they just pointed me round to the hotels. October 2012 a single room, without wash facilities, at the Hotel de la Gare was €40, a big shock after Spain! However I was grateful for a bed, and it did include breakfast.

I know that this is an old thread but thought I would post this here anyway. one of the hotels Margaret recommened has closed to make way for a new one.

Welcome to the Hotel Santiago Hendaye.
After 20 years of loyal service, the hotel Santiago closed October 1, 2012. A new hotel is under construction, we will welcome you from the month of November 2014. Thank you for your confidence. See you soon in our hotel Santiago Hendaye ..

Sil,

Thanks for your update! There is also an albergue for pilgrims, Gite du Litoral, in the center of Hendaye at 1 rue de la Fontaine. Here is their web page. I have not yet stayed there but it looks great!
