Jerusalem – Jordi Savall – Ramon Llull – Santiago

Yesterday evening we here in Jerusalem were treated to an experience of love, understanding, inter-faith communion, and beauty. All of Catalunya, indeed all of Spain, is celebrating 700 years to the death of the first known Cataluyan poet and priest Ramon Llull. An amazing man in his own right but only Jordi Savall can bring together Catalunya, Spain, Turkey, North Africa, and the Middle East in such an evening of harmony and joy. Christian, Muslim and Jew, the entire Mediterranean, communicating and celebrating through shared culture, shared music, and shared belief. It was marvelous! Hello Scruffy? This is a forum concerning the Camino Francés why do you bumble along about an obscure priest from the 13th century, Jordi Savall, and religious tolerance ? In the year 1265, Ramon Llull left Mallorca (Majorica) for Barcelona and walked to Santiago de Compostela, a fellow pilgrim deserving our respect. I truly believe that Jordi Savall exemplifies in his life his music and his beliefs the all-encompassing welcome and joy and spirituality of the foundations underlying the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. This small production is currently touring Europe, do not miss such an evening! One cannot totally enjoy an evening with Savall, the thought that Montserrat Figueras is no longer with him or with us is devastating. May she Rest in Peace.

Full circle. It's one of those Camino paradoxes that this pilgrimage route was born of the spirit that goes beyond divisions--and then was widely promoted as part of a regional struggle to bring an end to an era in Spain that had been marked by great cultural diversity--and now, centuries later it has been resurrected to transcend the darker strands of history, calling all of us to find that better part of ourselves that is pure and whole. Walking the Camino can bring us to exactly this same place, where hearts meet and inner walls break down:

...harmony and joy. Christian, Muslim and Jew, the entire Mediterranean, communicating and celebrating through shared culture, shared music, and shared belief.

As pilgrims we meet both the legendary Santiago Matamoros and Santiago as humble pilgrim--and these days the pilgrim version has for the moment gained most 'traction'. To emulate him, we have to have the same kind of harmony inside that we wish to foster outside, in the world. And music can open the heart to the possibility of this...and of peace.

@Stivandrer, your words resonate with me. Jordi Savall and Montserratt Figuera's music is always in my heart as well as my head . Thank you for this thread @scruffy1 I have often posted about Jordi Savall and Stivandrer's link to the performance of "Uskudara" bringing together Christian, Muslim and Jewish performers is one of the reasons why I think his music is relevant to the forum. Walking the Camino we meet others from all faiths (and none) from all the continents of the world, and where political differences are set aside in the communality of our shared endeavours. Montserratt Figueras died just before this performance was recorded and it is her voice that is heard in the middle section of the song and the reason that the performers look so sad.

For anyone walking the Norte this August, he will be performing in Santander 19 August.

It was emotional to hear her voice in the church at the concert. Her voice rang out and the the musician were solemn and teary eyed. I missed to hear her by 6 months !! It is still the best musical performance I have ever heard...
