Hello everyone,

First time doing the camino and I will be starting in Leon. Is 12-13 days enough time to get to Santiago without totally rushing? About how many miles a day is that? Thanks!!

Hi Stacey,

My wife and I will be starting in Leon as well. It's about 300 km's to Santiago from Leon so you're looking at about 25 km's per day to accomplish it in 12 days. Depending on your level of fitness I would say that it's very doable!

I hope that helped!

Ron

What is "average" may suit you or not . . . some people would complete this in 9-10 days, and others would take 2 weeks. My experience says, always leave a little margin over what you think you'll need, you'll be glad!

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Just finished and did it in 19 days. Thought it would be quicker but didn't foresee shin splints and the time it took my older body (52) to adapt. We did however make it to the coast in 3.5 days so my body did adapt eventually. I had allowed 20 days and expected to have a couple of days off. But that is the camino.

We are going do walk from Leon to Santiago (leave for our Camino in less than 2 weeks!) We have planned 14 -15 days for the walk - so an average of about 20 km per day, or 12-13 miles. We think we can probably do it in fewer days, but don't want to push ourselves unnecessarily. If we get to Santiago sooner, then great. If not, also great. We just didn't want to over-commit and then risk not making it due to over exerting ourselves and risking injury or just being unrealistic about the distance we can walk each day.

Yes it is very doable you will get faster as you get into the walk so dont push too hard at the start 20k and build it up and as the above post says depending on level of fitness but do remember there are buses from town to town the germans i met in Burgos called these perigrinos bus hoppers but remember its your camino and remember its not the destination but the journey eat well with those you meet smile with those that are happy and look after those feet. Buen Camino

Hi Stacey,

A brother Deacon and I will be doing the Camino from Leon starting in September. I've been working on different itineraries that we will follow depending on how our old tired bones react to the training we are undertaking this summer. Here are the stages we are looking at followed by distance in Km(Miles):

Here is our most demanding plan Leon-SDC in 12 Days

Leon-Villadongas21.4(13.3)
VIlladonga-Astorga27.1(16.8)
Astorga-Rabanal20.6(12.9)
Rabanal-Molinaseca25(15.5)
Molinaseca-Vilafranca30.7(19)
Vilafranca-O'cebreiro27.2(16.9)
O'cebreiro-Samos29.5(18.3)
Samos-Portomarrin34.4(21.4)
Portomarin-Palas de Rei24.5(15.3)
Palas de Rei-Arzua31.7(19.7)
Arzua-Monte du Gozo34.6(21.5)
MDG-SDC4.5(2.8)

Here a less demanding 13 days

Leon-San Martin24.8(15.4)
San Martin-Astorga23.5(14.6)
Astorga-Rabanal20.6(12.9)
Rabanal-Ponferrada32.7(20.4)
Ponferrada-Vilafranca22.5(14.1)
Vilafranca-O'cebeiro30(18.75)
O'cebreiro-Triscatela21(13.1)
Triscatela-Sarria17(10.9)
Sarria-PortoMarin22.5(14.1)
Portomarin-Palasde Rei24.5(15.3)
Palas de rei-Arzua31.7(19.7)
Arzua-Lavacolla28.8(18)
Lavacola-SDC10.1(6.3)

And here is what we are most likely going to do in 14 days as we ease up into the walk:

Leon-Virgen del camino 7(4.3)
Virgen del Ca-San Martin17(10.6)
San Martin-Astorga23.5(14.6)
Astorga-Rabanal20.6(12.9)

I'm leaving Leon on June 30th - planning on taking 13 days; my itinerary is based pretty much on the Brierley guide. I've pre-booked a few albergues - though I'm sure the fear of not finding a bed will quickly pass. Saw 'Walking the Camino" last night at the local cinema - the director/producer was there and it was packed with past and future pilgrims. See you out there!

Buen Camino!

Paul.
